5 Key Ingredients For A Moisturizing Conditioner

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

I've learned so much throughout my whole hair care journey and I realized that there are certain ingredients that I tend to look for in moisturizing deep conditioners. I look for ingredients that moisturize, penetrate, lubricate and soften. In my opinion these are the fundamentals of what a good moisturizing conditioner should have. This list could be longer, but I had to narrow it down :-)

1. Glycerin - A humectant meaning that it attracts moisture into your hair. It draws water from the air into the hair. It conditions your hair and it's very moisturizing for dry, brittle ends. A little goes a longgg way.

2. Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein - Excellent penetration into the outer protective layer of hair up to the outer cortex. It adds body and shine to hair. It's effective for repair and restructuring benefits. It also reduces brittleness and limpness. Your hair will get great benefits from this.

3. Oils - For lubrication. Gives more moisture to the hair. Helps to maintain softness, adds sheen, and protection. Depending on the oil, it can also strengthen the hair strands, i.e. Coconut Oil. Some good oils would be, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil, Castor Oil, Grapeseed Oil etc.

4. Fatty Alcohols - For example, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol are all natural fatty alcohols derived from coconut oil. They are widely used as emollients and stabilizing agents in conditioning and moisturizing treatments . These fats give back that soft feeling into the hair shaft by helping the cuticle to lie flat on the surface of the hair. They help to condition our hair and make it soft and manageable.

5. Panthenol (Provitamin B5) - Helps thicken each hair shaft naturally. Panthenol penetrates the hair shaft and root, and can thicken the hair by up to 10%. It also increases the strength of hair, giving it resistance to breakage. Panthenol makes a wonderful addition to hair conditioners, giving elasticity and luster to hair.

Here are a list of conditioners that contain all/most of these ingredients:

Creme of Nature Nourishing Conditioner: (Contains 5/5 Key Ingredients)
AtOne Botanical Reconstructor Conditioner: (Contains 4/5 Ingredients)
Herbal Essences Replenishing Conditioner: (Contains 3/5 Key Ingredients)

I believe that all/most of these 5 Key ingredients should already be in your deep conditioners and will help you on the path to healthier hair!

  2. Eek! Elasta QP DPR (the only deep conditioner I use) has only 2 out of 5-- lots of essentials oils and Cetyl Alcohol. I'm nearing the end of the container so I will be making a decision whether to buy another jar soon.

  8. Thanks Jade! Shampoo your hair first, add oil to your conditioner (2tsps) then apply it to your hair from root to tip. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and go under the dryer for 20-20mins. Rinse and proceed to apply your leave-ins.
