Hair Question: Do You Use Growth Aids?

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

I get this question ALL THE TIME! The answer is...NO. I do not use growth aids in my hair care regimen. I must admit, I did try it (MN and Sulfur 8) very early in my hair care regimen for 2-3 weeks but I quickly became lazy with it and my hair smelt really bad because of it...Eeeww. So I ditched it.

I think that the BEST growth aid is making sure your SCALP IS ALWAYS CLEAN. Hair does grow, whether you want to believe it or not. A clean scalp is the best way to ensure your hair growth is not stunted, blocked, or inhibited in any way. With frequent Co-washing, Deep conditioning and Shampooing (with a Sulfate free shampoo), you will notice your hair growth taking off simply because there is nothing holding it back!

I just wanted to clear the air about this question. I guess many people think that hair can only grow fast if there is some growth aid product causing it. That is false where my hair regimen is concerned :-)

  1. What if for my moisturising and sealing I mix water with coconut oil ? Rather than applying moisture first before sealing, does it make a difference?

  2. Do you braid your hair to quicken growth or you just depend on your regimen to stimulate growth?

  3. I agree Sunshyne... I know many of the women on the hair boards end up ditching the growth aids because of the smell or because they can't be bothered with applying it everyday. I personally believe that eating healthy, exercising, drinking lots of water, and taking vitamins are my "growth aids." Besides, hair will grow on its own. You just have to be patient and treat it right.

  6. You are right on the money Sunshyne. I too tried a growth aide in the beginning of my journey and ended up breaking my hair and setting myself back. I learned that growth aides are really not needed to grow long, healthy hair. Kudos!

  7. @ Anonymous - If thats working out great for your hair, keep it up! Doing it in sections is key!

    - I just depend on my regimen and what I eat to stimulate growth, nothing else.

@ Dania, MF, SDN, Lavender - Thanks ladies for responding. Growth aids are too over hyped!

  9. I tried Surge Plus 14, which claimed to grow hair and I also tried doo gro growth stimulating oil, neither of which actually worked, but the Surge was great for detangling! I never had a tanlge when I used it. Doo gro grow stimulating was only great for sealing my ends, but i had to cut it short b/c it contains mineral oil, now I use doo gro thickening oil when i message my front hairline. It smells good. I don't know if it actaully works as far as thickening.

  10. @ Toya - Thank you for the compliment. Feel free to bring her over, she's more than welcome to.

@ JTN - I still have a full bottle of Surge. Im so scard to use it. Its full of strong proteins and my hair hates protein.

  11. I use Mega Tek but I also use aruvedic oils. I believe you should get to know your OWN hair. Every person's regimen is their own and it is in direct connection to the response from the health of their hair.

  12. I personally believe that they are a clever marketing scheme for us black women who want to grow our hair. Many of us have never had long hair. Growth aids mainly keep you on a daily schedule to do things you should be doing anyway. Massaging your scalp, for example. Smelly hair is just not worth it to me. When I started my hhj, I had a goal in mind. I have had APL before. I promised myself that I would enjoy my hair no matter what stage.

    1. Wash your hair every 2 weeks then moisturize/seal and re-braid.
