Nupur Henna Review

Friday, June 24, 2011

Promises: Godrej Nupur brings to you the best quality of Rajasthani Mehendi with nine carefully chosen natural herbs valued for their hair care benefits. The ingredients are added in perfect proportions to give your hair the fabulous shiny & silky feel that you desire every single day.

Directions: Soak Nupur Mehendi in water for 2-3 hours. You may add curd/oil for extra softness. Apply paste evenly from root to tip of the hair. Leave for 3-4 hours. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Ingredients:

Shikakai - Leaves hair clean & shining
Aloe Vera - Moisturises hair & makes it silky
Methi (Fenugreek) - Conditions, nourishes and revitalizes hair
Bhringraj - Makes hair luxuriant
Amla - Darkens hair colour, adds shine & luster
Neem - Fights scalp infection and prevents dandruff
Hibiscus - Rejuvenates hair, making it silky and shiny
Jatamansi - Prevents graying of hair
Brahmi - Promotes hair growth

The Truth: My sister and I had a Henna Party this month. I premixed our Henna 2-3 hours prior to us applying it. I used the whole pack for the both of us. I mixed mine with distilled water until it was a yogurt-like consistency so that it's easier to apply (less mess). I then added 2tbsps of Olive Oil. My sister used Black tea in her mix along with Amla oil and Coconut oil. I applied my Henna and damp/dry freshly shampooed hair. I applied it in sections leaving it on for a total of 3 hrs with a plastic cap over it.

Once the 3hrs were up, I rinsed the Henna out until the water ran clear. Upon rinsing, my hair felt VERY ROUGH and if I were to run my fingers through my hair to help rinse out the Henna I would have ended up in nothing but TANGLES. I'm there thinking "I heard so many positive reviews about this product. It's supposed to be somewhat moisturizing out of the bunch, why does my hair FEEL like this then?" With that in mind, I just let the water run on my hair and detangle itself. Due to the dryness, I co-washed twice after and my hair felt back to normal after that.

After air drying, I used Scurl as my leave-in and my hair EXPLODED!! Immediately I noticed an increase in thickness, heaviness, stronger hair, darker hair, fluffiness & volume! There was a tint of color but nothing to rave about.

The ONLY downfall is the fact that I think I'm ALLERGIC to this stuff. Throughout the whole process, the herbs (were probably too strong) gave me a horrible horrible headache. From when I started mixing I felt so weird and weak. I felt nauseous throughout the whole process. It really turned me off!!

Pros

  • Stronger Hair
  • Darker Hair
  • Tint of color
  • Thicker Hair
  • Fluffy/volume with movement
  • Easy to wash out
  • No graininess/very finely sifted powder
  • Easy mixing
Cons
  • Very drying
  • Hair texture felt rough
  • Horrible herbal scent
  • Felt sick during the whole process (2-3hrs)
  • Headache
  • Noticed some breakage when detangling
  • No shine
  • No softness
Overall, the pros and cons are even. Would I use this Henna again? Chances are, No. If I do, I will add more conditioning agents to the mix i.e. MORE Oil, conditioner, curd etc. and leave it on for maybe 1-2hrs..not 3. I do advise that anyone who does decide to use it, deep condition afterward or add conditioner to the Henna itself. It's great for the nourishment, but those who naturally have dry hair, make sure you do a heavy moisturizing treatment after or stay away from it. Period.

    1. I have never had a problem with this product. My hair was falling out due to a grip of stress. My hair has improve in the area of little to no dandruff, significant hair growth, lots of shine-body. I constantly get compliments from others. I also sleep with it in my hair overnight. I mix my henna with coconut oil. It works! I'm happy and I use henna once a week because my hair is growing rapidly.

  5. thank you so much for posting your review of this product. Would you recommend someone to use the indigo/henna to color their hair (jet black)? ive been hearing alot of the ladies raving about using indigo/and henna to achieve jet black...
or would i be better off just using texture and tones brand of jet black? thanks so much...

  6. Hey girl, I live in toronto and I'm just wondering where could I find this? where did you get it from. And how did your hair color change (darker or redder?)

  7. @ Ann Noire - I've never heard of that before. Is that a different Henna brand?

@ HHJ - Yea, I'm starting to think maybe Henna really isn't for me. I haven't given up yet though. I can totally relate though .SMH.

@ Diedrian - My sis had the same results as me. She found it to be very drying opposed to the Lush Henna she normally uses. She didn't get nauseous though. Lucky her :)

@ Suzy - Good luck with trying it this weekend. Hope your results are better than mine.

@ Jessrenae - Yes, definitely. If I'm not mistaken, the indigo helps to darken the hair. It's natural and safe. Give it a shot :)

  8. I am really sorry your first experience didnt go well.... this is how it is for most of us That use henna. I would like to suggest NEVER starting out with just water and oil... you can add warm coconut milk as your base and then oil and I promise you you'll never turn back! You can also use black tea and add conditioner and oils. You may be allergic to something in this henna but you can always try one without the herbs that may be causing you to feel like this- I feel like this when I use indigo in my henna so I avoid indigo all together. Also keep in mind that henna is a process that BUILDS onto the hairshaft- while nupur is known to give great results after the first use, you should wait at least after 4 applications to SEE an immediate transformation. You've got to work with the henna like you worked with your regimen and find what works best. I hope this helps :-0 Better Henna Blessings

  12. withintheworld said's advice is definitely on point....I have tried henna a couple of times, and both times I mixed the henna with warm coconut milk as the base, and also added a couple tablespoons of castor and avocado oils. I definitely do a deep moisture based condition afterwards also.

  13. Sunshyne, Try going to hennaforhair.com and do a little research on Henna, there's tons of great info there. (Although henna is considered to be a form of protein. Indian powders are known to be a bit drying, always best to use oils when incorporating those into your treatments.)

  14. Btw, I didn't use water and oil. I used Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner, Coconut milk, and I believe an oil. I got the recipe from moptop maven. SAME effect. So I doubt it makes any difference that you only used water and oil. My experience taught me that I will never try this again. Lol!

  15. Sorry about your experience. I would like to try this, never tried henna before but I did try another Nupur product and the results weren't bad. Yea, the key is to condition the hair well afterwards. Where can I find this product in the GTA :)

  16. WOOOOOOOOW!! And I wanted to use Henna because I heard that it made your haire thicker (which it actually did), but I think i'll go elsewhere. Do you think maybe it was the brand? I've heard that body art Henna was best. I need thicker hair Miss Sunshyne....

  19. Hi,
I am from India and we usually mix the henna on the previous night of applying and allows it to sit for some 6-8 hours. You can add curd, eggs, etc. to the henna. But the most important thing: keep the mixture in an iron container. T will help in building up more deep colour. Good luck.
