3 Penetrating Oils My Hair Loves!

Sunday, April 28, 2013

I absolutely love Avocado oil, Coconut oil and Olive oil!! Every time I deep condition I'm reminded of how much I depend on these oils. They are a must have in my hair regimen. I know I've talked about these oils before (3 Penetrating Oils - 2009), however, they are so essential in one's hair care journey as they provide strength, elasticity, nourishment, and most importantly they penetrate right into the cortex (up to 90%). Once an ingredient penetrates into the cortex, it has the ability to repair the hair from the inside out.

Over the years, I've noticed a change in the health and thickness of my hair once I implemented these oils into my regimen. I can definitely say that these oils contributed to the health of my hair is partly due to the combination of these oils. I love love love them!

I tend to use these oils (3PO) only in my deep conditions, with heat for approximately 20-30mins. I find this method is the best. It allows my hair to absorb all the nutrients since the heat swells open my cuticles, thus accepting all the nutrients these oils have to offer. I believe that penetrating oils and hydrolyzed proteins are essentially the main ingredients, in products, that have the ability to truly penetrate into the cuticle, thus repair dry damaged hair. Other ingredients help to make the hair feel smooth and soft, however, nothing beats high quality natural oils that enter the cortex to promote healthy hair.

Quick Breakdown:

Avocado oil - Humectant/supports moisture. Contains amino acids & vitamins A,B, D, and E.
Coconut oil - Provides strength & fortifies the hair. Reduces protein loss in the hair.
Olive oil - Fatty acids help increase elasticity & strength.

Which combination of oils works best for you? How do you use them?

  3. I love EVCO. It is my staple. I prepoo with it, use it for scalp massages, seal with it and add some to my deep conditioners. I also love EVOO, not as much as I used to, but I still use it. I like to use it in honey and EVOO treatments and as a prepoo before clarifying and in colder months.

I normally add a mixture of the 3 to my deep conditioner and use Avo oil for sealing most of the time.

  10. Tanks a lot for reediting this post and updating it, Sunshyne. I love avocado and coconut from the very beginning too, especially as hot oil treatments during my prepoo phase. Adding a tablespoon of avocado oil into my Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle rose conditioner makes it a real pleasure for my hair.

    1. Yes, you can find Avocado oil in any grocery store. It's among the other oils. You can deep condition without heat but leaving the conditioner on your hair for approx. 1 hr. Heat is best though. Yes, these oils work very well together to help increase the strength and thickness of the hair as it nourishes the hair strand.

  16. Oils I love: coconut (as a pre-poo), sweet almond (on my ends for sealing), hemp (as a pre-poo & for sealing), & grapeseed (for sealing & in moisturizing spritzes).
I found olive oil didn't penetrate enough, avocado oil was a bit too heavy for my hair, apricot kernel was too light & my hair never took to jojoba.

  17. I use coconut oil to seal, but i will have to part with it because it makes my hair feel slightly crunchy i guess because its protein but i use to oil my scalp and hair daily two years ago and loved it now it makes my scalp itch for some reason but i still seal with it just to get rid of it. I got my eye on avocado oil next and its about to get cold anyway and don't want hair to freeze up again, so coconut oil is starting to be a negative for me
