Stretching My Relaxer With Half Wigs!

Friday, May 24, 2013

When I stretch my relaxers, which is usually between 10-12 weeks, I like to do as little as possible with my hair to prevent unnecessary breakage. Low manipulation is key. My hair is full of new growth and it get's somewhat difficult to style at times, especially when I'm on the go.

A while ago, I purchased a half wig called "Tammy" in Natural Black (1B). You can get it from your local beauty supply store. I love and adore this wig. It's full of texture, volume and has a realistic length, so you wouldn't necessarily think it's fake. I wear two styles with this wig; the one you see in the photo above and another style with a muff in the front.

To achieve the look I did in these photos, I left a small section of hair out in the front. After I moisturized and sealed, I braided the hair (not too tight, but not too loose, you want your hair to match the waves in the wig so it blends in nicely). I then unravel the braid in the morning, put the rest of my hair in a bun and baggy my ends. I then cover the rest of my hair in a stocking cap and apply the wig. I blend my unbraided hair with the half wig until it looks uniform. That's it. It's a quick and simple style that brings a lot of compliments and my hair is protected and moisturized underneath. Lately, it's been my go-to style while I stretch.

How long do you stretch your relaxers? What helps you along the way?

  2. I am natural and have been wearing half wigs over my cornrows as a protective style for over a year. Itshelped me retain lots of length & gain lots more thickness. Like u Sunshyne, I don't like to manipulate my hair much. Half wigs look very natural & r very simple & convenient :)

  3. BEAUTIFUL! I love my half wigs. I love them even more now that I'm transitioning (7mos post). When I wear my half wig, I will put my hair in a flat french twist (after m/s), put my satin bonnet on then my wig cap and then my half wig. Since I put my satin bonnet on first it helps moisture from being lost from the wig cap. I pull all my hair back under the half wig and use a cute headband to cover the edge of the half wig. Can you say COMPLETE protective style??! Be blessed! :o)

  4. Hello Sunshyne, first let me say you are such an inspiration! Your hair is beautiful and your videos and posts are so informative! I am 40 and have just started my journey and I'm learning so many new things about my hair!! I find my self coming back to your site time and time again to look something up etc and I'm never disappointed. I would like to ask if you could do a video or detailed post on your next relaxer ( how you go through the whole process etc).

In one of your posts you said you didn't relax your hair bone straight ( you leave abit of texture). How do you achieve this and how long do you leave the relaxer on for. will you still use the protein mid step again or did you find that your new growth reverted too much? How often do you flat iron your hair? Apologies for all the questions! Have a blessed day!

    1. Hi love. Thank you so much for watching my videos and reading my blog. I appreciate it so much. I'm honored to help. I don't mind the questions at all :)

      - My hair does not relax bone straight. There is a tad bit of texture in my hair after my relaxer. This is done by using a Normal strength relaxer as opposed to a Strong relaxer. The Normal strength works much slower so you are more likely to achieve a textured look.

      - I will not use the protein mid step as it did revert my new growth and forced me to relax earlier than I normally would have.

      - I flat iron my hair once or twice every 2-3 months. Usually on relaxer day. It's extremely rare and I prefer it that way as it's the healthiest way to go.

  5. I love you for this post. lol. I recently had some minor breakage during the end of my 5 1/2 month stretch. I think that I may want to start investing in more full or half wigs. I really I was working aganist my texture toward the end. It was a hot mess, some days.

What brand is that wig? the texture looks alot like my hair toward that 12-14 week stage.

    1. Yes! Half/Full Wigs will save you. The texture is very realistic. The Tammy wig is the Quick Weave Synthetic Half Wig by Outre.

  11. Hi Sunshyne, "thanks" for posting this. The half and lace wigs saved me during the winter months. If you get a chance, take a look at my wig album, and let me know what you think. Any suggestions would be great for the summer months. As always, your encouraging spirit is appreciate.

  12. Hello Sunshyne! Luv the Half Wig on U, it looks nice. A couple of questions for you. How are you wearing your hair under the HW ie..braids, cornrows, twist etc.? The main thing I wanted to know is how will you detangle your hair on wash day, and what products will you use?

I'm Texlaxing now and at 5wks. post my NG starts to sing a whole new different tune. I normally wear my HW the week before I Texlax, just to keep down the manipulation and tangles. Would wear the HW alot more esp at the 5wks. post mark, but I'm afraid of my hair matting up in the braids. WOW! That was a lot....LOL! Thanks, BnB

  14. Hi Sunshyne! Thanks so much for all your articles, product reviews, and instructional videos. They have all helped me so much in my healthy hair journey. But I'm not sure if understand the instructions on how you prep your hair and apply the wig.

Is it possible for you to do a quick video tutorial?

Also, can you provide the name of the store or website where you purchased the half wig?

    Thanks so much!!
