Got My Grapeseed Oil - Pic Comparison

Friday, September 06, 2013

A couple weeks ago, I did a blog post on Grapeseed oil as one of the products on my wishlist. After researching this oil and learning about all the benefits it contained, I figured, why not test it out. I purchased the Filippo Berio brand from my local grocery store (in the picture above, on the right). However, immediately after purchasing it, my hubby noticed the color of the oil and brought it to my attention.

He mentioned that the oil looked very yellow, as if it was not originally from grapes, due to it's unauthentic color. I was somewhat shocked he would say that, but he did have a point. Although the Filippo Berio brand was 100% Pure (according to it's label), it was probably filtered/refined to some degree. I began Googling images of Grapeseed oil to see if there was a visual comparison between the different brands. I then came across my girl Ms EbonyCPrincess' post on Gourmet Oils vs. Grocery store oils and the difference between the two. She mentioned that the gourmet oils tend to be thicker in nature and much more potent (higher in quality). She gave reference to a video that displayed the Gourmet Grapeseed oil having a greenish looking color (similar to the picture below of the LaTournagelle Grapeseed oil). The video explained that the gourmet version was silkier to the touch and had a "nutty" scent. That right there was my "Ah ha" moment! Thanks ECP for sharing that.

With that  being said, I went over to Marshalls, looked in the cooking section and lo-and-behold it was there! I found the La Tourangelle brand of gourmet expeller pressed Grapeseed oil (very good brand). I really like the fact that the oil is in a can to preserve it's freshness. The can is huge in size, which will last me well into next year. Though it was more than double the grocery store price, I wanted to try the thicker more potent version for myself. I hope I like it :)

  4. My Grapeseed oil is purely cold pressed and clear coloured, like water but oily. Can I refer you to this very useful science-based article which helps to add weight to Ebony's point. The point was made regarding ~JBCO vs pure castor oil but the premise remains the same. I hope this helps :)

    1. Thank you English Grace for your input and source. But due to an oil being lighter in colour does not mean it's more natural or potent. The lighter it is, it means it has been chemically filtered to some degree. The grapeseed oil I purchased (the one greener in colour) is expeller pressed which is a chemical-free mechanical process that extracts oil from seeds and nuts. There is no external heat applied during the expeller pressing. Just be careful because the term "cold pressed" has been used erroneously in the U.S. for a number of years, often used as a marketing technique.

  6. Good to know. I feel like we have to be cautious of everything these days. I don't understand how companies can loosely use the term "natural" or "organic". All the while, the products aren't 100% natural.

Does this apply to EVOO as well? I use this brands EVOO and I get it from the grocery store or Target.

    1. I totally agree with how you feel. We have to be cautious and aware of what we are purchasing. As for Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Coconut oil, I would stick to "Extra Virgin". "Extra Virgin" is the highest quality. It's pressed fruit juice without additives.

  7. Do the brands use the same sort of grapes? The grape type might also affectc the colour outcome. It Will be interesting to hear your experience and what difference you see between the two brands.

GSO is also very good for your skin. I alter between using that and nacadamia oil as night creme Every second night.

  11. I've been using Whole Food 365 Brand. I didn't even know that the there was a difference. The whole foods brand is a dark green color so I do believe that it is the purest form. Thanks for sharing, very informative!
