Best Wash Day In A Long Time...

Yesterday was wash day and boy was my hair thanking me for the deep treatment it received. I shampoo'd with Creme of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo and deep conditioned with a mixture of Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner, Silk Elements Mega Cholesterol (almost finished, had to mix another conditioner with it) and a few squirts of Roux Porosity Control Conditioner.

I went under the heating cap for 30mins, then rinsed. Rinsing my hair out was a breeze. My hair detangled effortlessly while in the shower and the texture was incredibly smooth during and after air drying. I was so pleased. My hair hasn't felt this good in a while, especially since I've been so busy with the baby, family, work, school, friends etc. Time is very limited. Honestly, I think the Porosity Control contributed to the extra smoothness since it helps close the hair cuticles and lock in moisture.

(70% air dried hair)

FYI: Those experiencing rough, dry, porous hair, give Roux Porosity Control Conditioner a try in your deep conditioners (1-2tbsp), you won't regret it :)

First Time Using Eco Styler Gel

I purchased the Eco Styler Gel with Olive oil(last week), just to experiment, and to my surprise it lays down my new growth effortlessly.

It's still early to predict anything since I've only used it twice. I can honestly say that I'm impressed. It has a firm hold, brings out my curl pattern and doesn't flake. I applied it to dry hair, after I moisturized.

I'm approx. 6-7 weeks post relaxer in these pictures.

HELPFUL USAGE TIPS

Natural Hair

Strong Roots can be applied daily or every other day as the hair is in its natural state with no other chemical or additives to cause stress and tension. Apply strong directly on the scalp and massage for a minute or two to aide with penetration and circulation of the scalp.

Perm/Textured Hair

Strong Roost is best used as a hot oil treatment once per week prior to wash. You may choose to use this product twice per week but no more than twice. Please apply small amount to scalp ONLY gentle massage for one to two minutes. Note that perm and textured hair are exposed to the stressors of harsh chemicals. Such hair needs the greatest of care to maintain a balanced healthy hair as much as nature allow.

Braids/Weaves

Apply to scalp once per week prior to wash (if this is not possible) apply to scalp once the weave and or braids have been removed. Please note that weaves and braids cause a lot of stress on the scalp and gives way to poor circulation hence the risk hair loss is great.

Wigs

See the instructions above to care for your natural hair or perm/textured hair under the wig.

HELPFUL TIPS

• All Hair types can use strong roots as a hot oil treatment once per week prior to shampoo. Please ensure your shampoo is sulfate free for optimal results. Our Black Castor Oil Shampoo is sulfate free
• In a hurry or just want a quick hair treatment to rejuvenate your hair apply strong roots to the scalp massage as usual and then do a condition wash immediately. This is my girl on the run method…smile
• Use sulphate free hair care products, stay away from beauty products with sodium hydroxide. Some of these products leave the hair in a poor state.
• Mix a small amount of strong roots to your favorite hair grease and apply to scalp.
• Apply Strong Roots to scalp after hair wash and condition regiment is completed, then apply leave in condition…this is best used for natural hair.

The Truth: I've tried this product as a leave-in conditioner and as a daily moisturizer. I would have to say that it's better as a daily moisturizer as opposed to a leave-in conditioner on damp hair. On damp hair, it did absolutely nothing! It just sat on my strands causing it to weigh down and look stringy as it dried. No moisture, no detangling assistance whatsoever. I tried using a small amount of product to a large slab - no difference. I was very disappointed. However, I liked it better as a moisturizer. It hydrated my hair and made it soft to the touch once I gave it a chance to penetrate (2-5mins after applying). The trick is to use a small amount at a time. I also recommend using this product when baggying the ends!! It's superb for moisturizing parched ends to the point where you don't have to moisturize for a couple days. Unfortunately shipping took almost 4 weeks plus it's was $20 because I'm in Canada, which is a huge turn off!! I don't think I'll order this product again.

Hair Question: How Do You Use Red Pimento Oil?

"Just a quick question about the Red Pimento Oil do you recommended it before washing or can you mix with your leave in conditioner?"

Advice: From experience, it's best to use Strong Roots Red Pimento Oil before you shampoo your hair. Part your hair in sections, apply a small amount of the oil to your scalp. Massage it in for 2-5 mins (concentrating on the problem areas i.e. nape, temples, hairline etc.). Rinse, Shampoo & Deep Condition.

You can shampoo, t-shirt dry your hair (so it's no dripping wet), apply the Strong Roots Red Pimento Oil to your scalp in sections. Massage it in for 2-5 mins. Proceed to add your deep conditioner to the rest of your hair (focusing on your ends and hair shaft), avoiding your scalp.

Both methods should give you great results!

P.S. I wouldn't recommend you using this at a "leave-in" product, as it could possibly cause irritation to the scalp.

The Science Of Black Hair - A MUST Have!

I finally got my copy of the infamous comprehensive guide to textured hair care written by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy.

Audrey aka Sista Slick (all you hair veterans know Sista Slick from the hair forums back in the day) has always been someone I look up to in the hair care world. We share the same hair type (4b), therefore; I incorporated many of her practices/tips/suggestions in the beginning of my journey that has stuck with me 'till this very day. Because of her credibility, I knew this book was something I had to own!

I own the special edition, meaning it's a hard cover book and in color so you can see the beautiful images of hair fibers, diagrams etc. This book is by far the best tool to have while on your hair journey. I honestly wish it came out years ago *sigh*. It's the most organized, well thought out, and easy to understand guide to understanding our hair on a deeper level. Once you crack open this book and begin to read it, you won't put it down, seriously! Honestly, when I read this book, I act as if I'm a student of healthy hair care. I literally pick up my highlighter and begin focusing on all the important points that resonate with me. As you begin to read, your attitude and perception about our hair begins to change and eventually it will transform. All your old ways of thinking about Black hair will be abandoned.

As you read, you'll begin to understand why we reach the "shoulder-length plateau", you'll get an in depth look at pH balance, water issues and why it's important where hair porosity is concerned, how to maintain color treated hair, how to trim split ends, why your nightly routine is important, hair product suggestions and much more. Just to top it off, I love the glossary and product ingredient glossary at the back of the book just in case you don’t understand what certain terms mean or you are trying to make sense of the ingredients in your hair care products, you have it all there at your convenience :)

Although I've been on my journey for 4 years and reached my goal of MBL (with occasional trims to BSL), there's still so much more to learn. I just can't put this book down. Audrey Davis made it incredibly easy to begin your hair journey with little to no error on your part. All the info is there for you introducing you to healthy hair strategies for achieving beautiful radiant hair, regardless of your hair type. It will be your "go-to" reference book – it's mine for sure. Get yours today!

The Truth: This pomade is by far absolutely amazing! I love it dearly. I was introduced to it this past summer by my sister. I used it a couple times to slick down my edges and it did exactly that and more! I had incredible shine and long lasting hold. For some odd reason, it went missing a couple weeks back! I misplaced it somewhere in my house and for WEEKS I went around searching for this product because I was stretching my relaxer. I was craving the hold and slickness I get from this product that I really don't experience anywhere else. Lo and behold it shows up out of the blue today and I used it early this morning. I was in awe again :) The hold I get from this edge control is like no other. It does not compare to Elasta QP Glaze. In my opiniton Elasta QP Glaze is horrible since the hold is not strong at all (wears off within hours), it's oily and it runs down onto your face causing you to look and feel greasy. Yuck!

Edge control has a strong firm "grip" on the hair to the point where your hair feels locked in place, yet, there's no white crusty residue or hardness. It does exactly what it says it's supposed to do. It's my "go-to" product I use now while stretching my relaxer. When I use it, it's looks as if I'm 2-3 weeks post relaxer as opposed to 8 weeks (which is what I am at this present moment).

Tip: Do not leave this product out in the open without the lid on as the quality of the product can diminish quickly and it won't work as effectively.

I've smelt the Juicy Spritz and it smells really nice. Not too over powering as a few people mentioned to me.

Could Hygral Fatigue Be Damaging Your Hair?

Did you know that...

Hygral fatigue can damage the hair due to swelling and contraction of the hair during the uptake and loss of water. As a result, this process can eventually weaken the hair by causing damage to the hair cuticle and cortex.

Swelling and de-swelling of hair is one of the causes of hair damage. If the cuticle is constantly under stress, it will expose the cortex thus causing porosity issues and breakage.

The swelling of the hair shaft is limited by the presence of oil. Coconut oil can be used as a pre-wash treatment (great for preventing protein loss) to prevent the hair shaft from swelling. This may help the cuticle from being raised and exposing the cortex.

Remember that the swelling of the hair shaft can damage the hair cuticle and cortex which can eventually weaken hair.

I Love My Shower Filter!

My shower filter, by far, is one of the BEST things I've purchased for my hair this year! It was everything my hair was looking for and needing (check this post to read about my hard water issues). For my first use, I made sure I used my clarifying shampoo so that all the buildup (mineral deposits) from previous wash days wouldn't inhibit my results and how my hair would react to the water.

After my initial use, I instantly felt the difference in my hair while wet and while I was air drying. While wet, my hair was smoother in texture and softer. The water felt gentle and it didn't have an odor like before. Once my hair air dried, it felt as though the products I used actually penetrated my strands. Not to say that it didn't before, however; the water gave my products a boost in effectiveness- so it seems. My hair air dried softer than usual, smoother, very fluffy with bounce (a lot more movement than normal) and less tangles!!!

My first experience with my shower filter was a huge upgrade from what I've been accustomed too. I'm looking forward to less bad hair days and dryness now!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Have you tried EVOO (Extra virgin olive oil) in your hair regimen? If not, wait no further!

When used on the hair, extra virgin olive oil can nourish, condition and improve the strength and elasticity.

Due to it's ability to penetrate the hair shaft, this rich moisturizing oil can reach the cortex of the hair, allowing the hair to feel conditioned, nourished, and healthy with each use.

Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidant vitamin E, vitamin A and helps heal dry flaky scalp, also known as dandruff.

Ways to add this oil into your hair regimen for maximum benefits:

Preshampoo treatment - Add 2-4 tbsps of EVOO to your dry unwashed hair. Apply to the ends first. Use the rest in your scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap for 15-20mins (with or without heat). Wash and condition as usual.

Scalp oil - Add 2 tbsps of EVOO to a applicator bottle. Place bottle in warm water to heat up. Test on wrist until desired temp is reached. Apply to the scalp and massage for 10-15 mins. The oil will help dandruff and dryness and the massage will promote growth.

Leave-in - You can use a dab of EVOO over your leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture thus helping to retain a proper moisture balance.

Mixed into your deep conditioner - Add 1-2 tbsps of EVOO to your desired deep conditioner for soft, conditioned, smooth hair. This is my favourite method!!

I Got A Shower Filter!

It's official. I now have access to clean chlorine free shower water! So that means wayyyy better hair days to come...I hope. It was a breeze to install. Very fast and simple. The filter lasts up to 6 months, which is a pretty long time. We got it from Home Depot.

Now, I'm excited for wash day. I really hope my hair feels a significant change in texture and softness. My hair has been very disorderly and disobedient lately (due to the hard water), so I hope this filter will aid in bringing my hair back to life.

To my surprise, I was going through all my protein reconstructors and I realized that Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute helps in the fight against hard water and the damage that comes with it. The Truth: My sister and I had a Henna Party this month. I premixed our Henna 2-3 hours prior to us applying it. I used the whole pack for the both of us. I mixed mine with distilled water until it was a yogurt-like consistency so that it's easier to apply (less mess). I then added 2tbsps of Olive Oil. My sister used Black tea in her mix along with Amla oil and Coconut oil. I applied my Henna and damp/dry freshly shampooed hair. I applied it in sections leaving it on for a total of 3 hrs with a plastic cap over it.

Once the 3hrs were up, I rinsed the Henna out until the water ran clear. Upon rinsing, my hair felt VERY ROUGH and if I were to run my fingers through my hair to help rinse out the Henna I would have ended up in nothing but TANGLES. I'm there thinking "I heard so many positive reviews about this product. It's supposed to be somewhat moisturizing out of the bunch, why does my hair FEEL like this then?" With that in mind, I just let the water run on my hair and detangle itself. Due to the dryness, I co-washed twice after and my hair felt back to normal after that.

After air drying, I used Scurl as my leave-in and my hair EXPLODED!! Immediately I noticed an increase in thickness, heaviness, stronger hair, darker hair, fluffiness & volume! There was a tint of color but nothing to rave about.

The ONLY downfall is the fact that I think I'm ALLERGIC to this stuff. Throughout the whole process, the herbs (were probably too strong) gave me a horrible horrible headache. From when I started mixing I felt so weird and weak. I felt nauseous throughout the whole process. It really turned me off!!

Overall, the pros and cons are even. Would I use this Henna again? Chances are, No. If I do, I will add more conditioning agents to the mix i.e. MORE Oil, conditioner, curd etc. and leave it on for maybe 1-2hrs..not 3. I do advise that anyone who does decide to use it, deep condition afterward or add conditioner to the Henna itself. It's great for the nourishment, but those who naturally have dry hair, make sure you do a heavy moisturizing treatment after or stay away from it. Period.

Jessicurl Event At HoneyFig

Last week I attended the Jessicurl "Meet & Greet"event at HoneyFig in Toronto. I had a blast! The event was packed with product reviews, product demonstrations, hair discussions, fun, and a lot of laughter! We were in a nice intimate setting, maybe 15-20 people in total. I'm so happy I went, especially since my decision to go was so last minute. I met ladies with gorgeous kinks and curls. They were extremely nice and approachable too. It felt real good talking about hair face-to-face rather than over the internet (don't get me wrong, I love talking to my ladies over the net too...it's just more fun in person ☺), it was like a sisterhood. I had the pleasure of reuniting with the owner of HoneyFig and spending time with her lovely sales reps (I'm coming back again just to visit you guys..LOL).

Overall, the event really opened up my eyes on this particular product hair line. I learned a lot about Jessicurl and what it can do for afro kinky hair. Yes, the owner is Caucasian, I know that can be an issue for some when it comes to product usage, but she really targets all curly hair types i.e. those with type 2 hair -type 4 hair. Based on her knowledge and what she shared at the meeting, she understands our hair type and through her products she helps address those issues i.e. dryness, shrinkage etc. It really shocked me to see ladies with type 4 hair rave about her Jessicurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment (Read up on it here). It's rich in herbs, butters and THICK in consistency. I just may try it out in the near future...who knows! Well that's it, just wanted to share my outing....

Let's Chat: Do You Understand Your Hair?

I ask this because often times, our hair is in protective styles i.e. buns, wigs, weave, braids etc. day in and day out at an attempt to retain length and keep the hair healthy.

However, constant protective styling (without some freedom occasionally) can rob us of knowing our hair because we never truly give ourselves a chance to understand the characteristics of our hair.

Not knowing our hair = no connection to our hair = greater chance of a setback!

Look at it like this, if your hair is tucked away - all the time- how will you ever know when it's dry? when it needs protein? if it's moisturized enough? if a product truly works? how to manage it when it's down/straight? etc.

I believe that one should protective style throughout their hair journey, however, one should also learn to enjoy their hair as much as they can i.e. wearing it down occasionally, try different low manipulation styles, or straighten it ever so often etc. in order to learn how it behaves outside of the predictable "protective styling environment". Learning our hair in this manner could potentially lead to a greater understanding. Just a thought.

Remember, no one knows your hair better than you!

Guess What I Got In The Mail - My NEW Hair Therapy Wrap

Hair Update: May 2011 Relaxer Results

I'm really pleased with how well this relaxer took. I was 3 months post and it was a task getting through all of my new growth. My hair is pretty straight this time but has some texture. I decided not to put heat in my hair as yet. Maybe in a couple weeks or so. I'm trying to maintain my goal length of MBL (Mid Back Length)...so far so good even though I got a trim back in March! My next trim will be in August 2011.

Got Hard Water?

Regardless of the products you are using? even if you've clarified your hair? You could be suffering with hard water. I know I am :(

I recently moved to a new subdivision and I no longer have my soft water system that ran throughout my whole house. If you are not familiar with soft water, it is the TRUTH!! It's like no other. It leaves your hair and skin so moisturized. I step out of the shower and my skin is hydrated. Lotion or oil on my body was not a necessity like it is now. Without my soft water, I feel extra dry. My skin and hair feel different!! I notice that my hair feels unusually tangled, dry and rough all the time if I don't use my trusty Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo FIRST. Have a Happy and Wonderful Mother's Day Weekend !!

As you may or may not know, this is my first Mother's day as a MOM and I'm just so happy and blessed to actually be a part of this celebration! It's the hardest job in the world (because its 24/7 & there's no manual to prep you) but, honestly, it's the most rewarding & fulfilling role one could ever have. I wouldn't trade it for a thing! I need my little guy, just as much as he needs me :) [If the hubby hears this he'll get jealous..lol]

Becoming a mom has allowed me to appreciate my mother much much more! Nothing but love and respect to all the Mother's and Mother figures out there. Let's Honor our Mother's with Love and Praise always.

Got My First Pack Of Henna!

I picked up my first pack of henna today. It's called Nupur 100% Natural Mehendi. It's packed with 9 Herbs i.e. Brahmi, Shikakai, Aloe Vera, Methi, Bhringraj, Amla, Neem, Hibiscus, Jatamansi.

I'm so excited. I've heard nothing but POSITIVE things where this brand of henna is concerned, so I'm anxious to try it out.

Many say that they experience soft, shiny, silky hair and that's exactly what I want!! LOL I'm trying figure out when I will get a chance to give it a go since henna takes several hours to do.

Once I try it out I'll report back with the results. Chances are, it will be next week.

The Truth: Wow! Creme of Nature hit the SPOT! When using this shampoo it reminds me of the original formula that I used to use wayyy back in the day when I first started my hair journey..memories :)

I'm very impressed with this shampoo. I guess Creme of Nature really took in the opinions of their customers and changed their shampoo back to a sulfate free formula. Excellent move. It leaves my hair feeling extremely soft and silky. It detangles like NO OTHER! Seriously. All tangles instantly melt away, it's incredible. The shampoo has a rich yellow shimmery color to it and it's very creamy. A little amount goes a long way. It predominantly smells like Argan oil and the scent lingers in your hair :)

The only downside to this shampoo is that I think they slightly over did it when adding in the oil. My hair feels a tad bit weighed down after using it. Other than the oil, I'm not sure what it could be. I made sure I clarified before I used it so I'm thinking it could be the oil. The sad thing is, I've used this shampoo about 3-4 times and each time my hair felt the same :| Oh well, that doesn't change my mind about this shampoo. I still think highly of it and I would recommend it!

This shampoo just recently hit the shelves, so keep checking at your local beauty supply store near you.

Time Saver Tip: Deep Conditioning Overnight

For those who claim to have no spare time to do their hair or looking for a way to cut their hair routine time down, try Deep conditioning overnight!

It's a no-brainer right?!

This method kills 2 birds with 1 stone. I like to call it the Sleep n Treat Method..LOL (Sleep while you get a good treatment). This method is great for busy moms like myself, those who are always on the go and for those who are looking for an intense treatment.

Here's what I do to save time:

I shower and shampoo the night before. I then apply my deep conditioner on my damp t-shirt dried hair. Put on the plastic cap and tie my satin scarf over it for security. Wake up in the morning and rinse. Apply leave-ins and air dry in a bun.

Or

You can reverse it: Deep condition on dry hair overnight then co-wash it out in the morning.

Simple!

This method is great since you don't have to constantly run in and out of the shower or sit under the dryer when you have things to do. I tend to use oils or moisture deep conditioners for the Sleep n Treat method. I would never use a protein based conditioner for this method as I would run the risk of getting hard/stiff hair.

I bought this oil back in May 2010 (product haul May 2010) and I've been using it on and off ever since. This oil is by far one of the best oils I've ever used. It does exactly what it says and I lovvveee it. I have been using it as a sealant, after my Hot Six Oil ran out, and it locks in moisture very well, my hair feels conditioned, has more shine and the texture is much softer to the touch than usual. It makes my ends feel so smooth and soft I find myself randomly touching my ends throughout the day just in awe at how nice it feels. I don't put it on the scalp, therfore I can't comment on hair growth, although you can. I just use Jamaican Black Castor Oil on my scalp exclusively. I apply WGO (Wild Growth Oil) on my ends in sections after I'm done moisturizing. It's a deep yellow color and has a thick/sticky-like consistency. The only downside is the scent of the oil, it's not the greatest. It's really hard to compare it to anything else since there's nothing like it to be honest, LOL. The more you use it the less you notice it. I also find that the scent doesn't linger. Overall I love this oil as a sealant. It does an amazing job at softening my texture (especially if it's dry and tangled) and locking in moisture.

Hair Update: Got a Trim :)

It's been a while since I did an update so here it goes...

I relaxed my hair back in February 2011 and to my surprise it was waist length (yay!) however; my ends where not up to my standards. They looked thinner than usual so I decided to trim it a little passed BSL since the length that I want to maintain is MBL. I trimmed it in March (after a wash and blow dry) and I'm loving it!!! I really can't handle waist length hair, it's just too much work. I love BSL/MBL hair. It's perfect for me. So that's pretty much it, where the trim is concerned. From now on I'll be growing it back to MBL and maintaining that length & thicker ends, trimming it every other relaxer.

Unfortunately, my regimen is almost non existent, LOL. It's sad to say, but I'm not as ridged with my hair as I was before. I've been co-washing a few times a week and only deep conditioning maybe once a week?! Moisturizing and sealing once every 2-3 days?! Horrible and unacceptable! I know :( I've been slacking a bit since life has become a little hectic for the past couple months (moving into a new house, traveling, death of a family member etc.) but that is about to change. I'll definitely be going back to my old regimen. That's life I guess. That just goes to show that sometimes life gets in the way but you have to pick up where you left off and continue on.

As of now, I'm currently 7 weeks post relaxer, due for a relaxer early May. I will be self relaxing at home as usual. I plan on using a different neutralizing shampoo this time around. I noticed that ORS Neutralizing shampoo is a bit drying so I will be experimenting with Motions moisturizing neutralizing shampoo. I heard great things about it so I'll test it out and see. Top 7 Ways To Beat Dry Hair

Use a moisturizing shampoo - Look for shampoo's that are opaque in color since they tend to have little to no harsh ingredients that will strip the hair of it's moisture.

Deep condition with a rich moisturizing conditioner - Regularly go under the dryer or heating cap for 20-30 mins with a thick moisture rich conditioner. If you don't have a heat source, leave it on for 1 hr with a plastic cap and towel wrapped around your hair. This will help minimize damage, and hydrate your hair.

Conditioner wash (co-wash) if you must - Washing your hair with conditioner is one of the easiest and quickest ways to cleanse/moisten the hair without stripping the natural oils. Always use a moisturizing conditioner for this process. Tip: add a dime size amount of the conditioner, you used to co-wash, back into the hair as part of your leave-in conditioner for extra moisture.

Moisturize and seal often - Moisturize and seal (applying a small amount of natural oil to your ends i.e. olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil etc.) your ends daily (recommended) or just a few times a week . Always use a water based moisturizer. Tip: Try to part your hair in sections for efficient coverage.

Do a protein treatment - Regular protein treatments are good for the hair since hair is made up of protein. Protein helps to rebuild the structure of the hair. It helps to fill in the cracks/open spaces along the hair shaft thus allowing the hair to keep in more moisture.

Use acidic products to match the pH level of your hair - Hair in its healthiest state is at a pH level of 4.5-5.5, which is acidic. Acidic products help to compact the hair cuticles having them lay flat and constricted thus making it hard for moisture to escape. Acidic products also give your hair a nice shine too. Tip: Citric Acid is known to adjust the pH level in most shampoos and conditioners down to a pH level of 4.5-5.

Hot oil treatments - Hot oil treatments are one of the best treatments for dry, brittle hair. If done regularly, hot oil treatments help to correct the moisture balance in the hair. It also increases elasticity in the hair thus aiding in length retention. Tip: For severe dry ends, dampen the hair with water, apply the oil to the ends first, then place a plastic cap over the hair overnight for maximum penetration. Shampoo or co-wash in the morning.

I Reached My Goal...Now What?

So I've officially reached my goal of Mid Back Length. Whoohoo!! I feel like I just graduated. LOL

My 3rd year anniversary passed Fall 2010, but I never had the chance to upload a comparison photo from start to finish. Just to re-cap, I've been on my hair journey since Fall 2007 and I reached Mid Back Length Summer 2010. Finally! Though I've experienced it all i.e. porosity issues, dryness, moisture overload, protein overload, chopped off 4'inches etc. it's been an amazing journey thus far. I've learned A TON of new things about hair, my hair and I'm truly proud of myself for being determined and dedicated. If you are unfamiliar with the drastic cut I got back in Fall 2008, you can read about it here.

Although I've reached my goal in length, that doesn't mean my hair journey is over, oh no no no. At this point in my journey, I will be exploring more products, making new goals and focusing on helping others rather than myself. I'll still be doing updates here and there but not as frequent as before since I'll just be maintaining MBL (cutting it to MBL each relaxer, no waist length for me..lol).

So in a nutshell, 2011 is all about maintaining this length, thickness and experimenting with other products, items and tools. Just keeping it very simple...I guess :)

Protein Overload? Let's Fix It!

If so, chances are you have "Protein Overload".

It's no secret that protein overload is commonly feared in the hair care world. One tends to avoid getting diagnosed with this title because it can easily cause a set back and it takes weeks to correct. There's no doubt about it, protein is essential in building healthy, strong, thick hair. Protein is supposed to make the hair hard and stiff to guard against breakage and normal wear and tear.

What is protein Overload?

"Protein Overload" is a term used when there is an abundance of protein vs. moisture in the hair.

Here is an example of how you can rid yourself of "Protein Overload":

First, Clarify the hair to remove all product build up. This is necessary because the products you use after will have a better chance at penetrating.

Do a 30-45min deep condition with a thick moisture rich conditioner under heat. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Optional - Follow up with an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse to help close the hair cuticles and lock in moisture.

Use a moisturizing leave-in conditioner, then style.

It's recommended that you follow this "moisture based routine" for 2-3 weeks since it does take more than 1-2 washes to see an improvement.

Ways to avoid/overcome "Protein Overload":

After using a protein based conditioner or reconstructor, always follow up with a moisture rich deep conditioner for 20-30mins with heat or 1 hour without heat.
Stay clear of moisturizers with proteins in them i.e. Collagen, Keratin etc. (unless your hair responds well to them).
Moisturize and seal daily.
Baggy your ends often.
Use protein treatments maximum once a week, if you're relaxed, or once a month if you're are natural.

Are You Relaxing Your ENTIRE Head?! Big No No :(

Question:

"Well I've been hearing a lot about perms and I am 13 weeks post because i thought my beautician was over-processing my hair when i went to get a perm. So when you get a perm aren't you supposed to perm only the new-growth? Because she perms the new growth and then applies the relaxer throughout my whole head from root to end? Isn't that over-processing?"

Advice: YES! You should speak up and let her know that there is absolutely NO NEED to relax previously relaxed hair! Putting relaxer on the entire head is only acceptable when performing a virgin relaxer, meaning, you have natural hair and you want to chemically relax your hair for the first time. Only in this case should you relax from root to tip. Once your hair grows out, 2-3 months later, you should receive a "touch-up". A touch-up is when you relax the new growth ONLY. There's no need to re-relax already relaxed hair....it's already been chemically altered to remain permanently straight.

Relaxing already relaxed hair is called "Over lapping". Repeatedly relaxing all the hair on your head is a good way to damage your hair and cause thin hair strands which eventually leads to breakage. When performing a touch-up, keep the relaxer on the new growth as much as possible and avoid re-relaxing previously relaxed hair. Many hair professionals are careless and lack vital information when it comes to maintaining healthy relaxed hair. They typically misuse these chemicals by relaxing previously relaxed hair from root to tip or they leave the relaxer on too long, also known as "Over processing".

Tip: Prior to applying relaxer to new growth, be sure to coat the ends of your previously relaxed hair with some type of conditioner, oil or Vaseline. This precaution will help prevent over processing of previously relaxed hair since the relaxer will have a hard time penetrating. Overtime your hair will become healthier. Also remember to condition before and after your relaxer :)

I get a lot of questions about Scurl No Drip on a weekly basis. Many ladies are curious as to why I use this product, how I use this product, the benefits and if I like it more than Wave Nouveau! Well this blog will explain ALL OF THAT! :)

S-Curl Activator & Moisturizer may be used daily to maintain and condition your curly hair style. It contains Glycerin and Vitamin B5, which together eliminate breakage and keep your curls soft, healthy and with a lasting sheen. This special "No Drip" Formula allows you to use S-Curl Activator without fear of ruining your clothes or pillow cases.

How I use this product:

I use this product 3 ways in my regimen.

1. Daily Moisturizer:

I am relaxed and I moisturize & seal twice a day (all year round) i.e. Morning and night. Even though this product was intended for Jherri curls/texturizers, it can also be used on natural, relaxed or texlaxed ladies for a boost in moisture. I part my hair in 6 sections. I spray 1 pump in my hand and then apply it to the section i.e. 1 pump per section. Then I proceed to seal my hair, normally I use Hot Six Oil with Scurl (love this combo). I do not end up with wet hair.

2. Leave-in Conditioner:

After washing & deep conditioning, or co-washing, I use Scurl No Drip as a leave-in conditioner. I've been doing this for well over a year now and it's a staple of mine. It leaves my hair very moist, smooth and soft. Don't fall into the propaganda, you can turn your moisturizer into a leave-in conditioner :) I spray my entire hairline, roots and nape first. I also pile my hair on top of my head and spray my ends. I then run my fingers through my hair to massage the product in and proceed to air dry then style i.e. buns, braid outs, flat iron etc. Then I will moisturize and seal after it's completely dry.

3. New growth softener:

I religiously spray Scurl in my new growth around week number 6-7 into my relaxer stretch. This product helps to hydrate my roots and strengthen my demarcation line to eliminate breakage. It's the ultimate new growth softener and curl enhancer, therefore making my hair more manageable.

Do I like it better than Wave Nouveau: Yes! I can't believe I'm saying this, but honestly, it's true! I actually use my Scurl No Drip far more than I use my Wave Nouveau moisturizer. I still use Wave Nouveau, but if I had to recommend a great multi-purpose product to anyone on their hair journey, especially if you are on a budget, I would suggest Scurl No Drip in a flash!!

EDIT TO ADD: This product can be used in the winter. Many people feel like they can't use glycerin based products in the winter but everyone's hair is different. I have no problems using Scurl or Wave nouveau in the winter. There may be a slight chance that your hair can get dry from using glycerin in the winter since it's main purpose is to draw moisture from the air into your hair. Typically there's no moisture in the air in the winter months, therefore it could start to draw moisture out from your hair. This may or may not be the case for you.

The Truth: I'm pretty impressed with this conditioner to be honest. For the price, you get a whole-lot of conditioner which is always a plus in my books along with great results. In the photo above, I added a Aussie Moist pump to the bottle just for convenience..lol. I wish it came with one though. Anyways, it has a pleasant scent....very refreshing yet sweet. It sort of reminds me of candy. The texture is great. It glides very easily onto the hair. It's not too thick not too thin with a light orange tint. The ingredients aren't top notch but it does condition and soften the hair. Plus, I'm not sure of how the hair can absorb vitamins (marketing?). I think it's best to ingest them rather than putting them on the hair.

I've tried this product on dry hair first and on damp hair after shampooing. I prefer using it on freshly shampoo'd hair. I would normally leave this deep conditioner on for 20-30mins with heat. When rinsing it out, I felt loads of slip and instant hydration, which is very good while stretching your relaxer. The slip lasts until you air dry so it's very easy to comb & detangle your hair. Once my hair was air drying, it felt soft, very smooth, manageable, slightly stronger and conditioned! Even though there's protein in this conditioner i.e. Hydrolyzed Soybean Protein, Soybean Protein, etc., you don't feel the stiffness or hard hair feeling. It's truly more on the moisturizing side than on the protein side.

Tips: Use once a week as a deep conditioner with heat for 20-30mins after shampooing to increase moisture level and strength.

Advice: Yes I've used both throughout my hair journey and here is my honest opinion on both relaxers based on my hair type 4b/c.

Motions Hair Relaxer (Lye)

Pros:

Leaves a bit of kink in the hair so your not completely bone straight
Hair feels smooth and silky
Hair is not over-processed or under-processed
No Breakage

Cons:

More likely to burn
Processes the hair quick
Lacks body

Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Relaxer (Lye)

Pros:

Mild
Leaves some kink/texture in the hair
Does not burn
Hair is smooth, soft and silky
Processes the hair slowly
More body & volume
No Breakage

Cons:

If you don't smooth the new growth enough you can be left with under-processed hair

Overall: I prefer the ORS Olive Oil relaxer. I've been using it for almost 2 years now. I loved it since the first time I used it and with continued usage I've noticed a difference in my hair overtime i.e. thickness, strength etc. Based on what my sister says, she found ORS Olive Oil relaxer way too strong (she's a 4a/b hair type). It processed her hair fast and left it pretty straight (straighter than she'd like). So it pretty much all depends on your hair type. That just goes to show that everyone's hair is different and my review is just a guideline. Hope it helps☺

Hair Question: What Can I Do To Prevent Split Ends

Question:

"I was wondering if you have any advice for preventing split ends. I have been moisturizing my ends.. but yet they are there. When I do trim.. what should I do to prevent them from forming? HHJ!!"

Advice: First and foremost, split ends can not be cured (some breakage and split ends are inevitable) so if you notice them, trim them off right away! With that being said, make sure that the shears you are using are sharp enough, otherwise, if they are dull, it will create more split ends. So once you've got rid of them, here are the steps you can take:

Moisturize and seal daily.
Use a sealant with substance, slightly heavier to reduce moisture loss.
Keep your ends protected.
Make sure your moisture & protein balance is in check.
Keep up with your Deep Treatments.
Minimize or eliminate direct heat, but if you must, air dry your hair instead of using a blow dryer then flat iron & use a heat protectant!
Do weekly hot oil treatments with Virgin Coconut oil and/or Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Overall, it's close to impossible to prevent split ends due to natural wear and tear. The best thing you can do is keep your hair strong yet moist, keep up with your trims/dustings, and minimize manipulation (opt for low manipulation styles) for optimal hair health.

Hair Question: How Do I Ask My Stylist For A Texlax?

Question:

I'm going to texlax sometime next year. When you go to the hair salon what do i ask for, a texlax??? how do i ask for it if she doesn't know what a texlax is?????? llol please help me lol thnx :D

Advice: "Texlax" is a term we use here on the hair boards, blogs etc. so they may not understand what your saying and look at you weird..lol.

For those who don't know, here is the definition:

Texlaxing - Allowing the relaxer to loosen the curl pattern by leaving it on for a short amount of time making it easily manageable, not necessarily straight.

If anything just tell them that you don't want to leave the relaxer on long (10-15mins max.) then rinse immediately. Also, tell your stylist that you don't want him/her to comb through the hair while it's being texlaxed (if you want more kink in your hair), just smoothing with their fingers will be sufficient. Combing through the hair while texlaxing will make the hair more straight. If your stylist fights with you and suggests to leave it on longer, stay strong and tell them that you don't want your hair to be bone straight. Remember, it's your hair :-)

For extra measures (optional), coat your hair (if your hair is virgin)/new growth with a lot of oil prior to arriving in order to slow down the penetration of the relaxer in your strands. When doing this, the relaxer won't make your hair bone straight.

Checking In On My Personal MBL Challenge

I look MBL but it still hasn't fully sunken in yet that I've actually reached my ultimate goal. I don't feel like I'm done just as yet. I guess because I was BSL for a while, it's just so foreign to actually claim a new length..LOL. As the months go by and I'm here at this level for a longer period of time 2-3months, I'll begin to claim it :-) Weird huh? I know!

Anyway, here were my goals back in Feb. 2010:

Old Goals:

~~Apply JBCO to scalp 3 times a week after wash day~~ Due to Castor Oil Challenge pt. 4
~~Take Multi-Vitamin and Omega 3-6-9 capsules daily~~ Stopped taking Omega 369 since April, still taking my Multi-Vitamin daily.
~~Drink 8 glasses of water daily~~
~~Exercise 3 times a week (I got a new membership..YAY Me!)~~
~~Increase shine and soften texture (hard goal but I'm willing to take on the challenge)~~ Did this with Coconut oil.
Buy a new steamer (my Hair Therapy Wrap broke..will explain later)
~~Simplify regimen and products even more!~~

Small Tweaks Since Feb 2010:

Baggied more (2-3x/week)
Instead of a light protein once a week, I used my reconstructor bi-weekly and a moisture/protein balanced conditioner in between.
Coconut oil treatments on dry hair twice a week for strength & shine.
Eliminated products that I no longer need. I just stick to the necessities. Still a working progress
Increased the usage of my heating cap vs. hooded dryer (more convenient at the time since it's portable).

New Goals for last quarter of 2010:

Maintain my length
Maintain my thickness
Remain a self relaxer
Dust often
Get a new steamer

Self Relaxer Results August 2010 + Brief Explanation

Relaxer took place: August 7th 2010

How Many Weeks Post: Relaxed at 11-12 weeks post (A little before the Castor Oil Challenge ended..I did the Ultimate level & it works!!)

Relaxer Used: Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Lye Normal Strength

Other tools: 2 Rat-tail combs, 2 pairs of tight latex gloves (very easy to feel new growth with), towels, timer.

Prep:

Detangled with Mane N Tail Detangler the day before
Put JBCO on scalp the day of relaxer
Put Coconut Oil and Vaseline on previously relaxed hair on day of relaxer

Total Time Of Relaxer Process: 20-25mins approx. with the help of my sister.

Method/Technique: Relaxed at home with the help of my sister. We parted the hair in 4 quadrants (2 in the front and 2 in the back). I took over the front portion and she relaxed the back portion. I pre-parted the hair in the front vertically and 2 strand twisted each section to make the process go faster. My sister pre-parted & 2 strand twisted the hair in the back section horizontally for fast and easy access. I went through the front 2-3 times (relaxing only the new growth) and she went over the back twice with smoothing (relaxing only the new growth).

I neutralized approx. 5 times with ORS Neutralizing shampoo then shampoo'd with Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo. I did a deep treatment with ORS Replenishing Conditioner mixed with JBCO, EVOO, Avocado and EVCO left it on for 30mins with heat. Rinsed and applied Scurl No Drip Activator as a leave-in and One n Only Argan Oil as a heat protectant/serum on damp hair. I air dried then proceeded to flat iron with my CHI camo flat iron. No trim.

Hair Question: Is It Okay To Use A Protein Leave-In Conditioner?

Question:

"Is it okay to use a protein based leave-in all the time or do I need to alternate with protein one time and moisturizer one?"

Advice:

I think it's always best to leave moisture in the hair rather than protein, since it has a tendency to make the hair hard and brittle. It's best to use a moisture based leave-in on the regular for soft, supply, moist hair. Protein is best to use during the conditioning phase of your regimen to strengthen the structure of your hair. You can still use a protein based leave-in conditioner, if anything, use a protein leave-in and then a moisturizing leave-in right after to balance it out. Or alternate the days you use them, 1 wash day use a moisture leave-in, 2nd wash day you use the protein leave-in.

Let's Chat: Still Haven't Mastered A Certain Area In Your Hair Journey?

Honestly, sometimes I feel like the character in this photo!! LOL

I've been on my journey for almost 3 years now and I still haven't mastered Bantu Knots..OMGosh I feel to scream! Someone help me. No matter which method I do or video tutorial I watch, it doesn't work for me.

Every time I try, I expect a better results but in the end, it looks horrific! I mean the curls are not defined, uniform, and they drop within a few hours SMH.

The fact that I'm this far in my journey makes me feel like this is something that should come natural by now, but it hasn't. I love braid outs and I believe I can do that style well, but I want to be versatile and opt for a different look other than the usual buns, braid outs or my lace front.

Question:

It's Official...I'm Stylist FREE - Relaxer Update

(above, is everything I used during my relaxer, the only things missing: 2 pairs of tight fitting latex gloves, 2 rat tail combs)

You don't understand how happy I am to actually be able to say that!!! :-) I'm free from stylists relaxing my hair. I no longer have to pay an arm and a leg to get a relaxer retouch (they charge me extra because of the length of my hair, plus extra because I stretch my relaxer and I use more relaxer cream than normal, plus HST taxes..LOL). Don't get me wrong, my stylist was great, however, I noticed that over time, he was getting lazy with my hair and not being gentle enough i.e. detangling. (Msg to stylist) Honestly, you cannot drag a comb through my hair, just because it's longer than before you think it can take the beating? Umm hello???!! my hair is wet and tangled (from the shampoo) plus you just relaxed it!!!! it's extremely weak at this point and I'm not into getting unnecessary breakage!! Ugh I'm not cool with that at all ladies. It takes only ONE mishap for one to suffer a setback and I'm not risking that.

I wasn't at peace so I decided to FINALLY take matters into my own hands and try self relaxing (after a lot of research). I recently relaxed it over the weekend with the help of my sister and everything was a success, the only downfall was me not applying Vaseline to my ears and forehead for protection, by the end, those areas were quite sore and tender. Other than that, I did not burn. I thoroughly detangled the night before with Mane N Tail detangler, the next day I based my scalp with Jamaican Black Castor Oil, applied Coconut oil and Vaseline to my previously relaxed hair for protection.

I parted my hair in 4 sections (2 in the front and 2 in the back) and my sister took care of the back portion while I focused on the front section. It was very easy since all the pressure wasn't placed on just one of us, it was split up evenly to work through my 12 weeks worth of new growth. We took about 20-25 mins to complete everything, I then neutralized approx.5 times (I do not play when it comes to relaxers) leaving it on for 10 mins on the last rinse.

I followed up with Porosity Control Conditioner for 5 mins and then Deep Conditioned with heat using Organic Root Stimulator Replenishing Conditioner for 30 mins mixed with the 3PO (3 Penetrating Oils). I then air dried and flat ironed. I will post the results later.

Overall, I'm happy with the results and I love the ORS Relaxing System. I plan on doing my own relaxers from now on. If anything, I'll probably go back to the salon for roller sets, but that's it.

Have Your Say: Are You Currently Happy With Your Regimen?

I'm still in the midst of simplifying my hair regimen and products. My ultimate goal is to cut down on the amount of products I have in rotation. I think the easier and simpler the better! So far it's been great, but I have a few things to tweak, remove and re-evaluate. Ideally, I would love to have 1-2 products per category i.e. 2 protein conditioners, 1 moisturizing shampoo, 2 moisturizing deep conditioners etc.

Anyone else on that same tip? Are you looking to drop your product-junkie ways? What would you like to tweak in your regimen?

New Style: Banana Clip Pin Curl Style

I did this style on air dried hair. I moisturized with S-Curl No Drip Activator and sealed with Hot Six Oil. I used 2 bobby pins per curl (6 in total) after securing the banana clip. I added a little muff in the front for style :)

I am 10 weeks post relaxer in these photos so don't mind the kinky coils! LOL

How My Hair Therapy Wrap Broke! ;(

Truth be told, I put my Hair Therapy Wrap in the microwave for over 90 seconds without intervals. I don't' know what I was thinking. Upon removing it out of the microwave, the gel packs were swollen like a balloon ready to pop. I was so nervous. Lo and behold, one of the gel packs burst open (left side near my ear). Since then, my Hair Therapy Wrap still works and I've used it but it's NOT the same! When conditioning, I feel like my left side doesn't get as hot as the rest of my hair. Ladies, learn from this experience! It's suggested that you leave the Hair Therapy Wrap in the microwave for 60 seconds with 10 second intervals.

In the meantime, I've been using my heating cap (from Sally Beauty Supply) and my Hot N Gold hooded dryer. I've had this heating cap for years and it still heats up VERY well. It makes my hair extremely soft and conditioned. I always use the highest setting to get the job done. In the meantime, I will continue to use my heating cap until I purchase a new Hair Therapy Wrap.

Tips On How To Summer-ize Your Hair

Summer is here and the heat has officially begun to wreak havoc on our hair! Remember that dryness is the enemy (why? because it leads to breakage), so here are a few tips to help your hair stay hydrated, leading you to retain length throughout the summer.

Co-wash frequently. This is one of the best ways to instantly infuse moisture into the hair. As opposed to shampoo, it cleanses the hair without removing your natural oils. Do this 2-3x/week.
Increase your deep conditioning. Instead of deep conditioning once a week, increase it to 2-3x/week. Remember, water is your friend!
Moisturize & Seal often. You should be moisturizing internally (i.e. drinking 8 glasses of water a day) and externally. Moisturizing your hair with a water based moisturizer (water should be the first ingredient) at least twice a day should do the trick (depending on your hair type). If you are the type to lightly spritz throughout the day, try a mixture of Aloe Vera Juice, Water, Glycerin and Coconut Oil in a spray bottle for softness and moisture. This will also help cool your scalp.
Introduce humectants in your regimen. Humectants draw moisture from the air into your hair. So take advantage of those hot humid days by adding Honey, Glycerin or Castor Oil to your Moisturizers and/or Deep Conditioners. Or you can purchase moisturizers with at least one of these ingredients to increase hydration. Your hair will thank you.
Rock a damp/wet bun. Dampen your hair with water (if you haven't co-washed or deep conditioned first), apply your moisturizer then seal, immediately bun your hair. Damp bunning a simple and an easy way to lock in moisture.

Wear a hat. This will ensure maximum protection from the sun and keep you cool.
Baggy your ends. Moisturize and seal then baggy for a few hours or overnight. This will give your hair a quick pick-me-up of hydration.
Protect your hair with Protective Styles. Opt for easy styles. Rock a chic side bun, french braid or half wig for protection against the heat. These low manipulation styles will help lock in moisture, prevent breakage and help retain length.
Beat Frizz. Keep your ends covered in the styles listed above and/or invest in an anti-frizz leave-in solution i.e. Leave-in Conditioner, Serum etc. to apply on the hair while damp for better results. Remember, frizz is caused by dryness, therefore; the best way to prevent dryness is to keep the hair moist and don't touch it (constant manipulation of the hair can cause frizz)!
Put down the Blow Dryer & Air Dry! Using heat frequently while in the heat can really rob the hair of moisture leading to unnecessary dryness and breakage. Put down the blow dryer and try air drying for a change. Give your hair a break. It may take a little longer but it's much healthier.

What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Gabrielle Allen aka MsLizziA and I am from New Orleans,La.

Have you always been natural? If not, what inspired you to go natural? Did you transition? If so, for how long?

I was natural when I was a kid up until about age 8. My mom relaxed my hair much against my aunt's, who is my hairdresser, wishes. I wasn't really inspired to go natural the very first time. I was curious about how my hair would look with a texturizer so I grew my hair out with the purpose of getting a texturizer. I loved it but it became entirely too tedious to do so I just decided to put a relaxer over it which caused all of my hair to fall out. As soon as I got that relaxer, I hated my hair and I wanted the fullness back. The same month I put that relaxer in was the same month I decided that I would go natural and this time I would learn to take care of my hair. That's when I found Hairlista!

The first time i transitioned in 2008, I transitioned for a year. The second time I went natural I transitioned in Feb 2009 with braids for 4 months and then big chopped!

What is your hair type?

My hair type is 3c/4a but I really try not to get caught up on hair types.

What do you love most about being natural?

I love the versatility, the fullness, the fact that I can straighten my hair without chemicals! I makes me different and it makes me standout from everyone else. New Orleans doesn't really have many women walking around with natural hair so I like that I can be different from everyone else.

What are your hair goals for 2010?

My hair goals for 2010 are to get my ends healthier and to retain length so I can be APL in 2011.

Name a few challenges you are currently facing with your hair. Have you been doing anything different to overcome these challenges?

Currently the biggest problem I have been having with my hair is my ends. They have been taking me through it with everything from SSKs (single strand knots) to just being dry. I have started DCing by saturating my hair in my deep conditioner as if i were applying a relaxer and concentrating on my ends. I have also start protective styling more often.

What styles do you love to wear the most and why? How do you go about achieving this style?

I love braidouts because it's easy, it takes less time, and I adore the look. I do braidouts on wet hair, damp hair, dry hair, and blown out hair. Sometimes I ask my cousin to flat twist it for me and sometimes I just do individual braids on my own.

Coconut oil - Great for DCs and leaves my hair soft
Olive Oil- Wonderful for detangling and pre-pooing
Crisco - Yes, Crisco because it's a great moisturizer and it is what i have been missing in my DCs
Roux Porosity Control - Love love love LOVE this stuff. My hair never used to retain moisture prior to discovering this.It literally saved my hair. I use it before or after I DC
Wheat Germ Oil - The ceramides boost my DCs like you wouldn't believe
Jamaican Black Castor Oil - I use this for my ends when I twist or braid my hair
Suave Coconut Conditioner and V05 Strawberries & Cream - My cowash conditioners
Aussie Moist Conditioner - My leave-in conditioner
LeKair Cholesterol - I make my own DC so this is the base of my deep conditioner
Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade - Great for my edges
Qhemet Alma Heavy Cream - This is my daily moisturizer even though i don't use it everyday. I used it mostly for when i bun my hair.
Eco Styler - My staple gel

I have my edges in micro braids right now and the middle of my hair is in a sew-in so I am PSing right now. As of now I just basically moisturize my scalp. I can't really wash my hair with this in because it will make the hair a tangled mess.

My regular regimen is pretty simple:
Cowash 2x a week
DC once a week
Moisturize and seal 2x a week
Pre-poo and Clarify every 4 weeks
Trim whenever I feel its needed

What products do you use to achieve soft beautiful curl definition?

Sometimes I just use conditioner and sometimes I just use eco styler. The key for me defining my hair has been applying the products and shaking my head once im done to put them all back in place. This method works really well for me.

How do you detangle your hair?

I saturate it in olive oil if its dry and detangle it from tip to root. If its wet, I just use conditioner and detangle in the same direction.

What product or technique would you say really helped your hair flourish?

I would say cowashing and has helped my hair flourish. The very 1st time I went natural, i remember always having issue with my hair being dry all the time so when I went natural the 2nd time, I started cowashing. Not only did my hair take off but it was actually moisturized!

Do you have any advice for other naturals?

Knowledge is power. Learn as much as you possibly can about products and how to care for your hair before you go run out and buy stuff. BE THROUGH . Just because someone markets a product as "made for naturals" doesn't mean it is. Know your ingredients, read reviews, and ask other naturals about their experience. Also, be patient with your hair and don't manipulate it so much. It will thank you for it later.

My Favourite 2010 Summer Hair Style : Banding!

I love to wear this style in the summer. It keeps my hair moist, this style is great for showing length (try it for yourself!), and my ends are kept in place and not entirely exposed to outside elements. It's a nice change from the "everyday bun". LOL

I always make sure I put an extra coating of oil on my ends just for protection. I normally do this style after I co-wash. I used ouchless ponytail holders and my headband is from Ardene Accessory Store.

What's your name and where are you from?

My name is Rene Syler. I grew up in Sacramento, CA but my television career took me to Reno, NV, Birmingham, AL, Dallas, TX and ultimately NY where I live now.

Have you always been natural? If not, what inspired you to go natural? Did you transition? If so, for how long?

I have been natural for just over a year and I LOVE IT! Being on air talent for various TV stations and ultimately CBS (The Early Show), I wore my hair in the style of most black anchorwomen, relaxed and styled into a bob. When I got to CBS, we experimented with my look a bit and I started wearing it curly. The problem was, it was still relaxed straight, then my staff hairdresser, EVERY MORNING, would blow it out and then hot curl it (you know, with the oven, not a regular curling iron). Along with that, I was getting it relaxed every 5 weeks (per another hairdresser’s suggestion) and coloring it too! It’s a wonder I had any hair on my head when I left in late 2006. I continued on with my over processing ways until November 2008. I cam down with asthmatic bronchitis and had to be hospitalized. They pumped me full of medication and when I was released two days later, I headed right for the beauty shop for a touch up. Well, my poor hair had had enough. It started breaking and falling out, most acutely in the crown where the hair was about ½ long. I had never, even in all the years of abuse, had an issue with my hair falling out. I was so stunned I didn’t know what to do. By this time, I was seeing another hairdresser who told me no more relaxers, at least for the next several months. I took her advice and then some. I used no relaxers, I didn’t even manipulate it much, it was all hats for me (perfect since it was winter in NY). By late December, I had about ½ inch of new growth and I was shocked by how beautiful it was! I had no idea because I was so busy beating the heck out of it , relaxing as soon as one little curl turned up. I had actually forgotten what my natural hair looked like! Lo and behold it was gorgeous and in that instant I decided, no more chemicals for me, I am a natural girl.

I transitioned for about 3 ½ months, checking out YouTube videos and my own daughter’s hair for inspiration

What is your hair type?

I guess I am a 3B with 3C around the crown but not really sure. I could be all 3C. But what I have discovered is I have a bunch of different things going on on this head, LOL. I have hair that is nearly bone straight right next to a corkscrew shape, tightly curled hair. I do LOVE the curl pattern near the nape of my neck and at times, wish I had a head full of that. This whole journey, as traumatic as the beginning was, has been a wonderful learning experience. I was a 45-year-old woman who had NO IDEA how to take care of her own hair, much less what my hair type was or the products I should be using.

What do you love most about being natural?

There are so many things I love about it. I love that this mass of curls totally fits my personality, wild and untamed, soft and surprising. Curly, straight, twists, I love the versatility, who knew I could do so much with my hair? I love that I have NEVER had a bad hair day since going natural. I love that God made my hair so unique and I now (after more than 4 decades of not) appreciate it. I love that it takes so little time for me to get going in the morning and I love that its like a new toy with me.. everyday is a new surprise.

What are your hair goals for 2010?

When I first cut my hair, all I could focus on was length. I now understand “if you build it they will come” in other words, the length is a byproduct of a solid foundation of good hair care.

I just want the kind of healthy hair that turns heads and makes people ask, “ is that a weave?” KIDDING!

I would have to say I am blessed because I haven’t really had many challenges with my hair, once I stopped beating the crap out of it! But I suppose my main challenge would be retaining moisture. I baggy at least 4-5 nights a week, for the whole night and that helps immensely. I also carry around travel size moisturizers in my make up bag and will apply it at least once or twice a day, depending on the time of year.

What styles do you love to wear the most and why? How do you go about achieving this style?

I am really pretty much a wash-n-go girl. I use Hair Rules for curl definition, though sometimes I like the way it looks with just a little JBCO on the ends. I like twists as a protective style and I pull them back during the day but to be honest, I have not managed the twist out look for me as yet. My hair is still a bit uneven as the back has a looser curl and hangs differently. So when I do a twist out is resembles a mullet. I do roller sets about once a month.

List the products that you use and how you use them. What is your current hair regimen? Share what works for you!

Well the path I took to get here is littered with shampoo bottles and curl products, lol but here goes.

--I pre-poo overnight with olive oil then cleanse once a week using Organic Curl Maintenance shampoo that I buy at the health food store. It has no sulfates which I SWEAR by.

--Deep Condition with whatever is on hand. I like the Olive Oil Replenishing Pak by ORS.

--I have been around the horn on gels and crèmes and the like. I started with Miss Jessie’s, then on to Kinky Curly Custard Crème, Deva Curl before settling in on Hair Rules, which is my favorite. I like it because you use it in the shower and then let it air dry, or sit under the dryer. It pulls my curls together and minimizes frizz without looking wet or greasy.

--I baggy overnight 4-5 nights a week to help ends and retain moisture.

-- I use NO DIRECT HEAT, in fact, I used a flat iron only twice in the last year and one of those was an emergency TV appearance.

--I avoid like the plague sulfate shampoos and conditioners with silicones in them. My curls really started to pop after I did those two things.

--I co wash 3-4 times a week with VO5 conditioner (no cones) and dry hair with a COTTON (not terry cloth) T-shirt, which helps minimize the frizz.

And that’s it!

What products do you use to achieve soft beautiful curl definition?

I’ve tried a lot of things, but have settled on Hair Rules. I think you really have to find the thing that works best for your hair. I was not a fan of Kinky Curly and though I began with it, really ended up not being wild about Miss Jessie’s. I like my curls to look natural, like I just rolled out of bed, gave my head a shake and they tumbled into place. Some of the other products made my hair look wet or greasy and I was not wild about that for me.

How do you detangle your hair?

I use a Denman brush to detangle sometimes but mainly I just use my hands. I get the hair good and soaked with my cheapie conditioner and then use my fingers as a rake sort of and work my way through it. I like using my hands because I can get a feel for how hard I am working my hair and if need be, lighten up a bit.

What product or technique would you say really helped your hair flourish?

Wow, that’s a tough question as I don’t think there is really an easy answer. But it boils down to what I stopped and what I started. I stopped abusing my hair with chemicals, color and heat. But it really took off once I got the sulfate shampoos and silicone conditioners out of my regimen. The baggying helped me retain length and treat the ends well though I never had much problem with breakage (outside of the post hospitalization episode). Being consistent with the hair vitamins, exercise and drinking water have helped a lot too.

Do you have any advice for other naturals?

A couple of things I think are very important.

--For those who have just BC’d I’d say be patient and enjoy every stage you are at. I look back at pictures of me from last summer and think, oh look how cute that short hair was. Your hair WILL grow if you are good to it.

--Have realistic expectations. Yes, your hair will grow. No it will NOT grow three inches in one month. Expecting it too, watching with a tape measure will only create stress, which will not help. RELAX!

--Find the regimen that works FOR YOU! You will read about so and so tried this and her hair grew three inches in a month (no it did not) and you may run out and buy and try that regimen. Don’t be sucked into that cycle. Follow your own path.

--Be Flexible. You may need to make changes here and there. Products that worked for your hair while it was shorter may not be as effective as you get more length. Don’t be afraid to switch it up.

-- Be proud of your look! Others may not understand “why you cut off all that beautiful hair” but they don’t need to. This is a personal decision and you don’t need to explain your motives to anyone. Look in the mirror, repeat after me “ I-AM-BEAUTIFUL!”
