The Truth: I've used this conditioner as a prepoo, co-wash and deep conditioner at various times just to see how my hair would respond to it in different scenarios. I must say that it's pretty good as a co-wash and prepoo as it provides instant slip and "moisture". The conditioner easily melts into the hair as you apply it. It has superb detangling abilities because of the slippage it provides. The texture is very runny and "liquid-y". I personally don't like my deep conditioners to have that type of consistency - I prefer thick & creamy. I bought this conditioner specifically for deep treatments and I wasn't entirely impressed with the results I got. On wash days my hair would feel fluffy, soft and moist, then the next day it's feel dry again - consistently!
At one point in time, I was prepoo'ing with EVOO overnight, just to experiment. I would then use the CON Moisture Extreme Conditioner as a DC and my hair would turn out buttery soft, the day of and the NEXT!! I was shocked :) So as a tip, if you are going to use this conditioner & you notice your hair feeling dry afterward, prepoo first with an oil of your choice - EVOO works great.
Overall, I will not be repurchasing, I believe the Creme of Nature Nourishing & Strengthening Treatment is much better!
Price: $12.99 CAD 32 OZ

Question:
Now, onto reconstructors. These contain the highest quantity of protein and provide very little conditioning. They're more concentrated containing smaller hydrolyzed proteins that penetrate and bind to the cuticle layers a little more deeply. The results are usually more dramatic and longer lasting than protein-based conditioners - their sole purpose is to repair/reconstruct the hair shaft...so these treatments don't offer much conditioning, and generally have to be followed up with a moisturizing conditioner.

"I'm so confused, what's the difference between protein conditioners and reconstructors??"Advice: Good question! I've always understood it as, protein conditioners are typically surface-acting conditioners, meaning that they contain larger protein molecules, therefore, they do not penetrate the cuticle layers deeply. Since the molecules are fairly large, they tend to wear off easily in a few days. Moisturizing agents can be found in these conditioners, so you may not need a moisturizing conditioner afterward.

Time has passed and I did not reach my goal of BSL by Spring 2009 *sigh* (although, I am fairly close). I'm quite disappointed in my efforts to reach this goal - like c'mon already man..geez.
However, I am grateful and pleased with the overall results I've attained from the new routine I've developed. Below, there are a couple things I've added after my last Personal MBL Challenge Update.
Small Tweaks:
- As of Feb 7th to present, I started using JBCO on my scalp.
- As of late March to present, I started using a light protein - weekly.
- As of Jan 21st to present, I've been using coconut oil as a prepoo protection treatment on my previously relaxed hair before a relaxer.

New Goals:- Hit FULL BSL bySpring 2009 (March-April)Fall 2009- Reach MBL(Oct. '09)Spring 2010..lol-Simplify my regimen & products even more-Keep breakage to a minimum-Baby my ends and Moisturize & Seal in Sections-Increase thickness of ends- Dust ends frequently-Use low pH products (shampoos & DC's)-Increase moisture level
- CONSISTENTLY Apply Jamaican Black Castor oil (not a fan of the regular Castor oil - sorry) to scalp 3x/week part of the Castor Oil Challenge Pt.2
- Increase/maintain thickness (hair & ends)
- Keep up with light protein weekly
- Incorporate more oils into regimen
- Co-wash 1x/week part of the Summer 2009 Co-wash Challenge
- Take Multi-Vitamins Daily & Fish Oils

I went to Planet Organic food store and found some Avocado oil (finally), Organic virgin coconut oil, and grapeseed oil.
I can't wait to add these oils into my regimen. I'm thinking about adding them to my protein conditioners and using EVOO (Extra virgin olive oil) and Honey strictly for my moisture deep conditioners - we'll see.
Side note, I'm so glad I found non-deodorized virgin coconut oil close to home and for a reasonable price ($11). It's so rare!

No growth, but the thickness is there :) I gotta up my game "go hard or go home" is what its all about right now - and I will.

I relaxed today(6.18.09). Everything went well. Applied coconut oil the day before and the day of my relaxer. I used ORS Olive Oil Lye Normal Strength (as you all know), did a mid step protein treatment with Hollywood Beauty Carrot Oil Cholesterol (stylist's choice), Neutralized (3x's), trimmed, roller set, blow dried a bit and that's it!
I got a little trim since I haven't had one since November 2008. I don't notice a huge difference in growth this time around. I SLACKED OFF big time applying the Castor oil to my scalp. I'm kicking myself right now. In total, I missed about 2-3 wks of the challenge i.e. vacation, busy with business and just straight up forgetting :(
However, I do see and feel a difference where thickness is concerned. My hair feels like it has more weight (stronger & heavier - Thanks to the Protein Is My BFF) and the health has improved tremendously. I'm happy with my hair right now :)
I barely have photo's of this relaxer b/c I have NO CAMERA. I'm deeply saddened by this. I was lucky to take photo's of my braid out since I was at my girls house. I have more photo's on Hairlista. You can also check out the Right hand column "Recent Hair Photos" for more pics.
Oh - I picked up a bottle of my beloved Jamaican Black Castor Oil so I'm back in businesssss.

Recently, I've been very curious and intrigued by this specific line. I'm looking into incorporating more salon quality products (i.e. Joico, Abba, Phyto Organics etc.) into my regimen, sooner or later. I've heard some good things about this line through my research and that the Humectin is way better than Nexxus Humectress (which I never liked much, so I'm hoping this line lives up to the hype).

ETA (June 14th 2009): I was in a huge rush prior to taking these photos so I wasn't able to add the steps I took to achieve this look. It's very simple. Here's what I did:
Shampoo'd with Creme of Nature (red label)
Lightly Conditioned in the shower with Silk Elements Cholesterol (3mins with plastic cap)
Rinsed
T-shirt dried (5mins)
Sectioned off my hair in 6 parts
Moisturized with Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Lotion (small dime size amount)
Detangled with a wide tooth comb from the ends up
Sealed with Curls Whipped Creme (just a dab)
Applied a little amount of Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil to my ends
After braiding each braid, I rolled up the ends as if I were to pin curl my hair, I stopped rolling the ends after 2 rolls then I clipped the ends with small barrettes (didn't feel like using rollers..lol)
I tied my hair with a satin scarf, then went to bed. All I did was unravel the braids in the AM and added my accessories (silver flower clips)
That's It~

QUICK UPDATE:
I recently ran out of my precious Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I'm very disappointed, however, I do have a back up! =] So, for the rest of the Castor Oil Challenge (ends July 22nd) I will be using the regular clear Castor Oil I got from the Vitamin Shoppe (Home Health Brand, check the pic). I'm quite certain I will see the same results.
Other than that, the challenge is going smoothly. My new growth is kicking right now because it's thick and very coily - I love touching it. I'm supposed to be relaxing tomorrow, but because I don't have a camera as yet, I will be extending my relaxer to 11-12 weeks post (God help me).

Promises: Whipped Cream is the perfect product for natural styles (twists, locks, afros & more) for thick, kinky, curly 3c-4b hair! This thick, and ultra rich whipped cream has a warm vanilla cream fragrance that makes you want to eat it! It provides SUPERB curl definition, frizz protection all while providing moisture and sheen. Enriched with natural oils, exotic butters and nourishing extracts and botanicals. Also works great as gel substitute to smooth edges, slick hair, and to hold twists and locks in place.
Directions: Day 1 - Apply whipped cream to freshly cleansed/conditioned hair, while it is still wet. Moisturize with quenched curls moisturizer. Scrunch into hair, section by section. Allow hair to air dry. Day 2 - Refresh your curls with quenched curls moisturizer, and reapply whipped cream to curls as needed.
Ingredients: Purified Water, Certified Organic Sunflower Oil, Certified Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Cocoa Butter, Polyimide-1, Glyercin, Certified Organic Coconut Oil, Certified Organic Sweet Almond Oil, * Gardenia Essential Oil, Tahitian Coconut Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Avocado Oil, Plumeria Oil, Olive Oil, Sodium Carbomer, Centillica Asiatica, Panthenol, Octyl Palmitate, Polysorbate-80, Soy Tocopherols, Phenoxyethanol, Ethyl Hexyl Glyercin, Fragrance.
The Truth: I honestly have a LOVE/HATE relationship with this product that's why it took me forever to write a honest review about it. At times I love it (especially the vanilla scent) and other times it just did not work well with my hair. I get great results when I use it on damp (great for slicking edges with a satin scarf) or already moisturized hair, this way it acts as a sealant and it does a very good job at leaving my ends soft (which is pretty nice since it has a lot of penetrating oils). I've also used it on wet hair - just following the directions - and my hair felt like straw!!!
What I like most is the consistency of the product, it's very thick, creamy and potent, you don't need a lot to get the job done. I've had this product since Dec. and it's no where near empty. I would recommend this product as a winter sealant/moisturizer but more so a sealant. Will I repurchase in the future? Most likely no. I'll just use this one up until it's finished.
Price: $22.00 CAD 8 OZ

Did You Know That...
Coconut Oil (prevents/stops hair fall and strengthens the hair) can penetrate 90% into the hair's cortex (hairs inner fiber), while olive oil can only penetrate up to 25% in the hair shaft (which is still good). Sunflower oil and sesame oil, they can penetrate 5% into the hair.
As far as I'm concerned, Avocado oil is also an inexpensive oil that penetrates into the hair's cortex very well (up there with Coconut Oil and Olive Oil), truly repairing the hair and not just coating the hair strand like most conditioners (never going past the cuticle).
A good way to incorporate these oils would be in the form of a prepoo (preferably overnight), hot oil treatment, or added in your Deep Conditioner. I would like to try prepooing with these oils all together (Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, Olive Oil) to see how my hair responds.
I've been doing a lot of research and these oils seem to be SUPREME in restoring your hair back to a healthy state. So far, I've been prepooing with EVOO overnight this week and I ADORE the results!! I've been eye-ing Avocado oil for some time now. I might just cave in and purchase it =]
