After you've applied some Coconut Oil to your hair, have you ever noticed that your hair feels stronger ? more durable? you get less breakage?
(In the pic is my Omega Nutrition Certified Pure Organic Coconut Oil)
Well I've noticed this every time I applied Coconut oil to my scalp and hair, so I did a little research and to my surprised I realized that Coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-poo (before washing your hair) and post-wash grooming product. Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, it is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft. Sunflower and mineral oils do not help at all in reducing the protein loss from hair.
Check out these cool facts about Coconut Oil and your hair:
-Coconut oil reduces protein loss up to 35% if applied on hair before washing
-Coconut oil increases the strength of hair by 13%
-Use of Coconut oil on bleached hair reduces protein loss that occurs during shampooing by up to 50%
-Regular use of Coconut oil on your hair stops shedding by 50% and promotes hair growth
-Unlike a few other vegetable oils which remain on the surface of the hair, Coconut oil penetrates right up to the central core of the hair
-Coconut oil serves as an excellent pre-conditioner and protects hair from day to day damage

Since the beginning of my hair care journey, I have learned so many little things that has helped me maximized my resluts in a very big way. Here are the tips that I have used with success :
1. Air drying my hair with a scarf around my hairline to get roots straight and hairline smooth.
2. Adding 100% pure glycerin (at times) to my favourite deep conditioner to maximize moisture.
3. After shampooing, I gently squeeze out excess water with towel right before deep conditioner. So that the conditioner can penetrate better.
4. Baggying ends with a little bit of moisturizer since a little goes a long way.
5. Using water based moisturizers with glycerin as the main ingredient to moisturize hair.
6. When shampooing, scrub the scalp only, not the hair itself. Less tangles this way.
7. Moisturize hair in sections that way all of my hair is moist not just the outer layer.
8. Tilting my head upside down, after I've applied my deep conditioner, to gather all my ends at the top and then covering it with a plastic cap so they get the most conditioning effects while under the hooded dryer.
9. Applying deep conditioner in sections as if I'm going to cornrow my hair or grease my scalp. The conditioner is applied to my roots then my tips using this method. My hair has changed so much with this!
10. Using cool/lukewarm water as my final rinse when rinshing out my deep conditioner. This closes the cuticles.
11. Applying moisturizer to my ends first (last 2-3 inches) then to the rest of my hair.
12. Adding EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and Honey to my moisturizing deep conditioners. This has given me slip and the tangles slip right out plus its very very moisturizing!! Love ITTTT
13. Only comb on wash days (I like very low manipulation) and finger comb in the week.
14. Putting glycerin based products on new growth while stretching to keep it extra soft between washes.
15. Last but not least, detangling in the SHOWER. I was one of those girls that washed and rinsed my head over the tub and ended up with TANGLES for DAYS. Those days are long gone and rinsing my hair and detangling with my wide tooth comb in the shower has been amazing for me.

P.S. What have you done throughout your hair journey that has helped in a BIG way???
After moisturizing & sealing or after you've washed, conditioned, and air dried your hair, put your hair into a bun and you'll notice that your hair will remain moisturized for a longer period of time since all the hair is gathered together and tucked away from the elements (i.e. clothing, weather etc.).
When your hair is in a clip, your ends are exposed or separated from each other thus allowing moisture to easily escape. Bunning is a low manipulative style that keeps the hair moist and protected throughout the day.
I've noticed a difference when bunning as opposed to just clipping up my hair. My hair is more moist when in a bun. Plus, moist hair 24/7 is the key to length retention. I now damp bun everyday without fail with my headbands (just like the pic). Try it and see how it works for you!

In order to attain long healthy hair, you have to make sure that your hair and ends (especially) stay moist and hydrated for as long as possible. There is a cool way for to retain more moisture in your hair and that's through a technique called "baggying".
Be cautious when you baggy because its very easy to over moisturize your hair and then get breakage. I notice that when I baggy in the day or before I go to bed, rather than baggy over night, I see no broken hairs and I don't have wet/mushy hair (the natural heat from your head plus the added moisture can give you wet hair if you full head baggy overnight) after taking off the plastic cap.
The trick is to use a small amount of your favourite moisturizer, don't seal, then put on your baggy. Once you take off the plastic cap, you can seal your ends with an oil of your choice.
Your done!
This method has helped me so much in retaining more length!! I highly recommend it. There are a couple ways you can do it. You can baggy your ends or you can baggy your whole head. I love to baggy my full head because my hair stays moist. It's very simple to do. If I'm at home in the day, I'll throw on my baggy over my hair and within a few hours I can feel my hair getting more moist without even applying my moisturizer (it's as if the baggy re-activates the moisturizer I had on my hair prior to)!
Baggying is when you apply a moisturizer to your hair and then put on a plastic sandwich bag or plastic shower cap over your hair, or ponytail, for a long period of time (2-3hrs or overnight). The plastic bag traps in the heat thus giving your hair the added moisture that it needs.

OMG its been an interesting journey but I can finally claim APL. I'm so happy words cannot describe. I've met my goal in about 7 months. In the beginning I thought it would take about a year. I'm glad that I've met my goal before that. I have gone through a couple set backs but that did not stop me. I relaxed on May 1st 2008 and I also got a trim. Here are the results:

The Truth: I purchased this product back in March 2008. This conditioner was so attractive to me simply because of the ingredients (contains a lot of natural extracts and oils), no fragrance, and it was cheap!! ($3-4) But boy did it turn out to be a nightmare. I applied it to my hair just like the directions said and I was left with a matted mess on my hair once it air dried. I got TANGLES after TANGLES after TANGLES!! I was gonna cry...literally. I dont know what went wrong to be honest. Probably because theres no WATER/AQUA in the ingredients. My hair was dry, brittle, stiff and of course NOT MOISTURIZED. I will never buy this product again. All I have to say is dont be fooled by the "nice" ingredients and cheap price of a conditioner...

I relaxed my hair on May 1st after a long 3 month stretch. I thought it would never be over, but it is and I've seen a big improvement in my hair. It has grown alot. I also got a mini trim or should I say "dusting" on my ends. I have not trimed my hair since November 16th 2007. I only trim my hair every other relaxer, so thats about 2-3 times a year. I think this will be my LAST 3 month stretch simply because its a lot of working keeping the new growth tame and untangled. I think the most I will stretch will be 8-10 weeks from now on...lol...we'll see.
My next relaxer will be on July 17th '08. In between that time I will be doing the same thing, wash twice a week, deep condition after each wash, moisturize and seal every morning and night and baggy once in a while whenever my ends feel extra dry. A detailed breakdown of my regimen will be posted within the next couple of days so keep posted and of course relaxer pics!!!
