Coconut Oil Makes Your Hair Stronger!

Sunday, May 25, 2008

After you've applied some Coconut Oil to your hair, have you ever noticed that your hair feels stronger ? more durable? you get less breakage?

Well I've noticed this every time I applied Coconut oil to my scalp and hair, so I did a little research and to my surprised I realized that Coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-poo (before washing your hair) and post-wash grooming product. Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, it is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft. Sunflower and mineral oils do not help at all in reducing the protein loss from hair.

Check out these cool facts about Coconut Oil and your hair:
-Coconut oil reduces protein loss up to 35% if applied on hair before washing
-Coconut oil increases the strength of hair by 13%
-Use of Coconut oil on bleached hair reduces protein loss that occurs during shampooing by up to 50%
-Regular use of Coconut oil on your hair stops shedding by 50% and promotes hair growth
-Unlike a few other vegetable oils which remain on the surface of the hair, Coconut oil penetrates right up to the central core of the hair
-Coconut oil serves as an excellent pre-conditioner and protects hair from day to day damage

  1. I loved using coconut oil as a pre-poo... I have since upgraded to using Coconut MIlk, which (I think) has moisturizing qualities as well as the protein.

  3. I warm it up and then pour it into a spray bottle. It's still messy because it drips but I am able to apply it more evenly to my hair (roots and shaft).

Regarding Elasta QP DPR-- I'm def going to keep it and follow the instructions saying to use heat... I'm thinking about investing in one of those heat caps so I won't need to be confined to my big ole Pibbs. =)

  12. I am new to you site, and I AM IN LOVE!!!!!!!!!! I have been looking for stuff that will hydrate my dry hair especially in this Atlanta sun. Well I wanted to know how do you apply the coconut oil to your hair? Do you apply it like "greasing your scalp" or put some in your hand and rub it over your hair (especially the ends)??

As soon as I get off work I am going to get some from the store..

    Thanks in advance.

  13. Thanks Orie for visiting my site. I appreciate the love. You can apply coconut oil to your hair in various ways i.e. to your scalp, on your hair and ends, in your deep conditioner, as a prepoo etc. I mainly use it as a pre-relaxer prep. I lightly coat my hair with it to protect my previous relaxed hair.

  16. I read about the coconut oil just skimming this web site looking for some help for my falling hair. I happen to be in the rest room and saw a bottle of coconut oil supplements that I purchased several years ago. They are soft gels capsules. (Coconut oil can be used for multiple health aids.) I think somebody told me it could be used for weight loss when I purchase them. Oh well...I never used them for this purpose. I just poked a small hole in one of the capsule and applied the oil to my hair and around my front hairline. Believe me, the breakage improved this very first time I put it on my hair. 2 days later, hardly any hair falling. I was thinking about purchasing the castor oil but think I will stick to these extra virgin coconut oil capsules until I use them up. I think my hair is going to be ok. Right now, I have been looking for help for thinning and falling hair. Thanks everybody for posting your experience with coconut oil. This has been very helpful.

  17. Okay, Help Ya'll! I think that I have way too much protein in my hair. I have been using alot of products without paying attention to ingredients and stuff like that. I am just now educating myself about my hair and the products that I use. The current affairs of my hair is dry dry dry dry! I noticed breakage as soon as I touch my hair (forget if the wind blows) I started a moisture therapy with Aussie Moist adn Herbal Essence "Hello Hydration"
    Can anyone help me?

  18. I am going out to buy coconut oil today. When I first discovered your site several months ago, I chose castor oil as my main oil and I loved it. I had been all natural for almost three years and was afraid to go back to the perm but loving what your hair looks like, Sunshyne, and many of your subscribers'! I finally went back to a relaxer about five weeks ago and my hair is back to breaking and shedding everytime I touch it, even though I am moisturizing and sealing every night, co-washing once/wk, deep conditioning once/wk, and if I flat iron or blow dry at all, no more than once/wk--and one of those blow dries was on cool air. Anyway, I am going to see what the coconut oil does for me (I hate to leave my castor!), and I'm also going to try switching to S-curl as my moisturizer instead of leave-in conditioner. Thanks for your wonderful sit--and all of the candid subscribers!

  20. I've been experiencing breakage on my natural hair and its got me petrified. One of my YT subscribers suggested Pre pooing with Coconut oil. I have a 16 ounce jar. I guess thats what I'll use it for. I should be washing tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. I hope everybody is right. I need it to stop. It's too scary to not have any control and I am so good to my hair.
