Today, I’ll be showing you how I do my “ends tucked under” bun protective style. I've shown this look before on my Blog and Instagram and since then I've received a lot of requests to do a tutorial. It's finally here :)
This is a really simple look that I like to do every-so-often. When I wear this bun my hair retains moisture, my ends are not exposed to the elements and my hair is off my shoulders in a cute, chic look!

Though I am a huge fan of protective styles, as they've assisted in growing my hair to its current length, I still enjoy my hair. I still wear it down, rock a braid out or twist out, but majority of the time my hair is in a protective style because it's simple and convenient in the week.
In this video I'm 10 weeks post relaxer. This style is very low maintenance, not to mention, this bun really helps me preserve the moisture levels in my hair while looking chic! It's a win win :)

Protective Styling: Revisiting My "Ends Tucked Under" Bun + Wash Day Experience

I tried a new product, a moisturizing deep conditioner, and to my surprise my hair responded to it so well that I cannot wait to use it again. Seriously!! I know I’m not the only one who gets happy when they find a moisture DC that works well for them?!? It’s such a satisfying feeling. LOL. Anyways, my hair felt fuller, softer and smooth which is what everyone desires after wash day- No? I will definitely do a product review and go more in depth about this new found gem - Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioner! Yup, it's for relaxed hair too.
Okay, I’m loving how full my bun is right now!! This bun is the result of my wash day experience. I did a light protein treatment on dry hair using Aphogee 2 min reconstructor mixed with Coconut oil. I left that on for 15 mins using my Hot Head Thermal Conditioning Cap. I shampooed using Keracare Sulfate free Hydrating Shampoo (lather 2x) and then applied the Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioner on damp hair mixed with my 3 Penetrating Oils (Avocado, Coconut and Olive Oil) and went under my hooded dryer for 30 mins.
Detangling was noticebly easier than usual though I’m almost 11 weeks post relaxer (going to relax in October 2018). Usually, at this point, in my relaxer stretch my hair tends to be a little demanding in terms of keeping my new growth tame, detangled and soft. Though it was my first time trying this new deep conditioner, I immediately noticed a positive difference in my hair. Woot Woot!
In case you're wondering, this style is super easy to achieve. I call it the "Ends Tucked Under" bun. I love rocking this style when I stretch my relaxer because I get more volume opposed to when I'm freshly relaxed. After I air dry, I moisturize and seal. I then secure my hair as if I'm doing a ponytail but not removing my hair out of the ponytail holder completely. So, essentially my ends are tucked under my ponytail holder :)

I took a much needed vacation to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with my immediate and extended family and a couple close friends! Oh, it was fantastic to say the least!! So many memories were created and new experiences were lived. It's easy to say that it's definitely going down as one of the best family trips thus far!!
Being 8 weeks post relaxer with thick new growth wouldn't be pleasant to deal with while on vacation - so I got feed in cornrows! I fell in love with this style over the past few months and figured it would be perfect "vacation hair" as I wouldn't have to deal with my hair for 7 days straight. That's HUGE for me because I always rock my own hair while on vacation, so the break is nice.

What I love most about this style is that it's so low maintenance! It's always "ready-to-go". Let's be honest, being away from home with an infant and styling your hair daily can be quiet difficult. I didn't want to lug conditioner, combs, moisturizers, gels, styling products etc. into my luggage. Low maintenance yet still cute was my goal. I wanted the luxury of waking up in the morning with freshly done hair to have extra time to put on a little foundation, lip gloss and mascara and tend to my kids. That's it! This style afforded me just that.
Products Used To Maintain My Feed-in Cornrows
Xpressions braid hair 1B, ACV, Better Braids Leave-In Conditioner, SCurl, ORS Edge Control, Virgin Coconut Oil
Braid Hair
I picked up 3 packs of Xpression braid hair in colour 1B (natural black); however, my friend only used two packs. I placed the bundles of hair in individual containers with water (about half way full) and added a little Apple Cider Vinegar (4-6 tbsp in each container). This solution lifts the chemicals on the synthetic hair that typically cause excessive itching. I leave the hair in this solution for a total of 15mins and rinse the hair with cold tap water at least 3-4 times to ensure all the white residue is removed. I then leave the hair to air dry (for 1-2 days) prior to use.
To nourish my hair while in braids, I use the Better Braids Leave-in Conditioner. I got this from the Beauty Supply Store. This spray nourishes and conditions your hair underneath the synthetic braids. It has Hydrolyzed Collagen, Aloe Leaf Juice, Panthenol, Glycerin etc. which help to strengthen and moisturize the hair. It has a fruity coconut scent that's mild for those who may be sensitive and it sprays clear leaving no build up.

Nightly routineI always ensure to spray the length of my braids (down to where my real hair stops) each day. I spray my braids just before bed with the Better Braids Leave-in Conditioner and tie it with my black satin scarf around the perimeter of my hair line and then cover with my big satin bonnet. My big satin bonnet is perfect as it has extra room for long hair styles. When I wake up in the morning and remove my scarf, my roots look fresh, flat and moist! If my scalp is itchy, I apply a small amount of Coconut oil directly to my scalp. It works like a charm.
Daily routine
If I need extra moisture throughout the day, I spray Scurl all over and down the length of my braids. Synthetic hair can make your hair dry and brittle so this extra boost in moisture is crucial. I also pay close attention to my nape and spray it well as that area can be very dry due to friction. Too, I use my ORS Edge Control to lay down my edges for a sleek look. Done!
I opted not to wash and condition my hair while rockin' this style since I'm leaving it in for only 1.5-2 weeks and then its back to my real hair and usual regimen!
In this video, I show you how I achieve one of my favourite protective styles. This faux milkmaid braid style is perfect for people like me who l o v e the milkmaid braid "look" but don't KNOW or WANT to cornrow :)
What I love most about this look is that it's super cute and easy to do. Too, after I rock this updo for 2-3 days I then unravel my braids and wear a simple yet defined braid out for a couple more days!!
So I go from protective style (milkmaid braids) to low manipulation style (braid out) without the need of combs, direct heat, excessive manipulation etc. It really gives my hair a break. It's a win/win for me!
I love jazzing up this style with a few gold hair accessories. I get them from the Beauty Supply Store for $1-2. I don't know what it is, but there's just something about GOLD bobby pins that I just love! It really enhances your styles in such a simple way! Love it.

I must say that protective styling has been my saving grace throughout my hair journey. Why? Because it allowed me to retain length, moisture and save time! Though I would periodically wear my hair out and rock a flat ironed style, I would always default back to my trusty protective styling regimen. Here's why...
Protective styling is key to the preservation of your ends! Truth be told, your ends are the oldest part of your hair; therefore, your ends are much more fragile than the rest of your strands. They need care, 'babying' and lots of it. Wearing your hair loose and manipulating old fragile ends on a daily basis inevitably leads to dryness, breakage and damage.

Check out these 5 Reasons Why Protective Styling is Your Friend:
1. Ends Get a Break - With your hair up off of your shoulders your ends will be protected against fabrics that create harmful friction and environmental factors which can prematurely cause hair cuticle damage.
2. Locked in Moisture - Wearing your hair down and loose, regularly, can enable the hair strands to lose internal moisture causing dryness making your hair more prone to splitting. Ensuring your hair is effectively moisturized, from root to tip, and wearing it up in a protective style will lock in moisture.
3. Length Retention - Hair regimens that emphasize protective styling typically experience longer hair faster as the hair is not manipulated frequently by styling tools, exposed to harsh fabrics or environmental elements i.e. wind, sun, air, rain etc. Protective styling + locked in moisture = length retention!
4. Maintain Cuticle Thickness - Wearing the hair loose, on a daily basis, increases wear and tear on the hair strands. As the hair is constantly exposed to outside elements, the roughening of the cuticle begins. Over time, the strands will begin to show a decrease in cuticle thickness causing thinness. Protective styling gives your hair a vacation by slowing down the wear and tear process and allowing you to maintain your strand's cuticle thickness.
5. Saves Time - Throwing your hair up in a bun, rocking braids or twists saves time when time is against you. You can easily jazz-up a protective style with a few hair accessories and immediately head out the door - which I so greatly appreciate.
Protective styling, daily or on a flexible schedule, will aid in increasing the quality and length of your hair.

Here are my 4 go-to styles I've been rocking while wearing my crochet braids. They are super easy, cute, great for different occassions and gentle on the scalp.
My absolute favourites would be the Top Knot and the Side Flat Twist. Here is a quick pictorial of how I create these two styles:
Step 1: I place my hair accessories in my braids in areas that I like. You can get them at any Beauty Supply Store.
Step 2: I then start my flat twist from the right ear taking a few braids at a time.
Step 3: I continue twisting until I reach the left side all the way down to the ends.
Step 4: I grab a few bobby pins to secure the flat twist at the back. All done!
Top Knot
Step 1: I grab a small section of hair (6-7 braids) at the top of my head.
Step 2: I begin to twist the small section of braids around in a clock wise motion. Tucking in any braids that may stick/pop out.
Step 3: I secure it with 1-2 bobby pins and thats it! All Done.
Wearing my hair down with a side part is a classy and elegant go-to look (perfect for the holidays) that doesn't require any steps to achieve - simply part & go!
My other simple style, with the middle part and two twists at the side, is very easy and chic (follow steps from side flat twist and repeat steps on the left and right side, use bobby pins to secure- done!).
I'm having a lot of fun with my braids and the variety of styles are endless!♥
