5 Tips For Effective Deep Conditioning! | Healthy Hair Journey
Monday, November 20, 2023Hey Hun! Let's talk Deep Conditioning.
So, recently I've been getting a lot of questions on deep conditioning and how to do it the right way to get the MOST out of your deep conditioning sessions. Deep conditioning should be one of those never-to-be-missed type of steps in your hair care routine. No negotiating about it! It's an imperative step in increasing the health of your hair and there are so many benefits to deep conditioning:
- Nourishes the hair
- Reduces split ends
- Makes your hair stronger
- Improves elasticity
- Gives your hair a boost in moisture
...Just to name a few!
Here are 5 Tips to Deep Condition, Effectively!
Apply in Sections.
Conditioner should be evenly distributed throughout your hair, that way no areas are neglected. Apply the conditioner to your hair in small sections. I like to create at least 5-6 sections and then apply my conditioner. This will ensure each strand is covered to receive all of the nutrients from your deep conditioner. You'll notice the difference!
Use a Heat Source.
Always aim to use a heat source when you deep condition. Why you ask? Well, heat helps to raise the cuticle layer allowing deeper penetration of the conditioner into the hair shaft. This is where the true hair repair takes place. Level up your deep conditioning sessions and grab yourself a heat cap, hooded dryer or hair steamer. This will add a boost in moisture and improve your elasticity. Your hair will love you for it! Trust me.
Focus on the Ends, First!
The ends of the hair should get first dibs when it comes to applying your deep conditioner! They are the oldest part of your hair and require the most attention, care and love. Apply your deep conditioner to the ends, first, that way you won't forget, and they'll soak up all the rich ingredients...first!
Frequency is Vital.
How often you deep condition is important, especially if your hair is dry, brittle, damaged or chemically treated. Aim to deep condition once a week! This will help replenish lost nutrients, prevent dehydration and increase the strength in your strands. Weekly conditioning will build your hair’s defense against breakage, increase length retention and improve the overall health of your hair.
It needs time to Work.
Deep conditioners need time to work! Once you’ve applied your deep conditioner in sections, cover your hair with a plastic cap and leave it on for at least 15-30mins with a heat source i.e. Heat cap.
No heat source? No worries!
Leave it on for 45mins - 1hr. Be sure to cover your hair with a couple plastic caps to really trap in the heat. This will leave your hair feeling manageable, hydrated and soft!
BONUS: Rinse out your deep conditioner with cool water. Cool water aids in closing the hair cuticles to lock in the nutrients from your deep conditioner improving shine and smoothness while decreasing tangles.
That's it. Super simple, yet effective.
Make deep conditioning your friend and watch your hair transform!
