Roux Porosity Control Conditioner 101
Wednesday, September 03, 2008There seems to be a lot of confusion about Roux Porosity Control Conditioner and how its used on the hair. Many ladies are having a hard time incorporating this product into their regimen simply because they do not know how to use it, what is it primarily for, and when to use it. I will address all of these questions for you.
Who: Those with chemically treated hair (color, perm, bleach, relaxer).
What: Equalizes the hair's porosity. Moisturizes, detangles, and lusterizes. Leaves hair vibrant looking and manageable.
Where: Apply to the roots and ends.
When:
1. If the hair overly dry and suffering from brittleness regardless of how much moisture is put into the hair.
2. Right before a chemical service so that the hair can readily and evenly accept the chemical service.
1. If the hair overly dry and suffering from brittleness regardless of how much moisture is put into the hair.
2. Right before a chemical service so that the hair can readily and evenly accept the chemical service.
Why: Porosity Control Conditioner is great! Hair in its healthiest state is at a pH level of 4.5-5.5 which is acidic, therefore holding a positive charge. Damaged hair tends to be more alkaline (about 7 on the pH scale) as a result from coloring, perms, bleaches, relaxers, thermal tools, therefore holding a negative charge. Hair in this state tends to look more dull, dry, cuticles are raised, tangles occur, and the cortex is exposed causing more damage. The proper pH level can be obtained by using Porosity Control Conditioner to acidify the hair since its a low pH product. This acidic conditioner helps to compact the hair cuticles having them lay flat and constricted. When the cuticles are closed and laying flat, light is able to reflect off of your hair (giving it shine) rather than absorb it (dry/dull looking). The hair will then become positively charged allowing you to manage your hair better and have it feel & look healthier than before.
How:
1. Apply to the hair before a chemical service to prevent chemical shock to ensure predictable results. This also helps prevent overlapping of the relaxer.
2. Apply after a chemical service when additional conditioning is required. Leave on for 30 seconds, rinse out.
3. Apply to the hair in sections while detangling the hair with a wide tooth comb. This is great before shampooing. Let it sit for 5-10mins after the detangling process, then rinse out.
4. Apply after shampooing. Let it sit for 2-5mins. Rinse and follow up with a deep conditioner for better conditioning results (more moisture, shine and elasticity).
5. Put 2-3tsp of the conditioner in your deep conditioner for added slip, cortex protection, impart shine, and align the bonding of the cuticles.
6. Use as a final rinse for detangling, and smoothness, leave on for 2-5 mins, then rinse out.

Here is the break down of the ingredients in the Roux Porosity Control Conditioner:

Lecithin - A natural emollient, emulsifier, antioxidant, and spreading agent, with a hydrophilic ingredient that attracts water and acts as a moisturizer.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride - Naturally derived from Guar tree, thickening and stabilizing agent.
Lactic acid - natural pH modifier and humectant.

Hydroxycitronellal - fragance
Methylparaben - preservatives
Propylparaben - preservatives
Dmdm hydantoin - preservatives

As one can see, humectants, conditioning agents and a pH adjuster are present in the ingredients and they are helpful in the process of the hair absorbing moisture better, therefore aiding to the correction of one's porous hair issues. Many ladies, including myself, notice the hair's ability to absorb/retain moisture better after using the Roux Porosity Control Conditioner.
Always remember -All Chemical services are alkaline, therefore hair that has been processed this way tends to be more alkaline. pH balanced shampoo's and/or conditioners are vital in healthy hair care.

thanks for the info, I use this product to control my hair porosity. I will try to add it to my DC.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I plan to use the Joico K-Pak Cuticle Sealer in the same way (especially #4 and #5).
ReplyDeleteThis post came right in time!
you are truely an inspiration to me and my family. ur hair is healthy and beautiful and ur progress has been amazing! you have changed my hair damage ways. keep up the excellent work girl. WE see u
ReplyDeleteI am a bit confused about this "Right before a chemical service so that the hair can readily and evenly accept the chemical service" How can you apply this right before a relaxer. Maybe I am reading it wrong.
ReplyDelete@ Todoni - Your welcome. Isn't just great?!
ReplyDelete@ Ms s. - Im glad it came right in time. I've never heard of the Joico K-Pak Cuticle Sealer. Is it a conditioner??
@ Say - I appreciate all of your kind words. Im glad I could be an inspiration to you and your family. Happy Hair Growing.
@ Grgia_peech - I know it can be quite confusing. I dont use this product in this manner. However, I have seen my stylist apply the conditioner on a client's dry hair and then put the relaxer on top of it, without washing it off. Or you can use the conditioner 3-4 days before your chemical service.
Do you use any kind of growth aids or take special vitamins? I ask because you hair grew so much in three month
ReplyDeleteI use this about a week before my relaxer, and it keeps my roots well-moisturized until I get the relaxer. Is it okay to use this regularly- like every week or every 2 weeks?
ReplyDelete@ Grgia_peech - No, I don't use growth aids, and I rarely take vitamins.
ReplyDelete@ Tiffanita - Yeah its okay to use this 1x/week. Since its ph balanced, your hair will benefit from it leaving you with smooth cuticles.
I am still confused how do you put this in before a chemical service do you wet the hair first then apply the relaxer or do you put it in a week before the relaxer?
ReplyDeletethank you so much your hair is beautiful
You can put it on a couple days before the relaxer (a couple ladies do this). In addition, I've seen my stylist apply it to dry hair and then apply the relaxer over it.
ReplyDeleteMost comprehensive info found yet. Thank you xx. Trying my best to grow my hair and have just purchased my first bottle. Would have been lost without your input.
ReplyDeleteThanks again
Have u ever heard of French Perm Stabilizer Plus? It says it is to help the PH of ur hair I use it as a final rinse and get similar results 2 what u described....I am curious to know if it is similar to the Porosity Control
ReplyDeleteHow often do you suggest using this product?
ReplyDeleteThis product sounds interesting...Can this be used for people that have natural hair?
ReplyDeleteWhere can I buy this product? I live in Montreal, and have not seen it anywhere.
ReplyDeleteTIA
@ Anonymous - Your welcome hun. I'm glad I could help
ReplyDelete@ PhD potential - Hmm, I've never heard of it. You can always compare the ingredients to see if they are similar.
@ Nuwoman02 - You can use this once a week to once a month. I wouldn't suggest using it more than twice a week though.
@ Anonymous - You can use this on natural hair i.e. as a rinse out, detangler, etc. has it helps close the hair cuticle. However, it's more geared towards chemically processed/treated hair.
@ Anonymous - You can get this at any BSS or Sally Beauty Supply Store. That's where I see Porosity Control.
I'd like to try using RPC mixed in with my deep conditioner. I deep condition w/heat (hooded dryer). I'd like to do this for 30minutes every other week. Is this advisable? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHey Sunshine,
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me if you recommend the shampoo over the conditioner or vica verca
I've been really excited to find and try this product, but after having gone through the list of ingredients and checked them out on http://www. cosmeticsdatabase. com (delete spaces), I found that several ingredients (specifically, the methyl and propylparabens, the dmdm hydantoin) of Roux Porosity Control are high-risk, meaning they're linked to cancer, reproductive problems, and other health issues. :( This makes me not want to buy this. And makes me want to go through and check all the beauty products I use. Be safe in your product use, girls!
ReplyDeleteHi Sunsyne - I've read this thread twice and am still slightly confused. Apart from pre/post relaxer, can this product be used weekly with a cold rinse following a DC? I purchased it c.3 weeks ago and have been using it this way with great results. But if using it this way could potentially be a problem I'd sooner know now before it's too late... Many thanks
ReplyDeleteCan this conditioner be used on natural hair? to control the porosity level?
ReplyDelete@ CM - Yes, the way you are using it is totally fine.
ReplyDelete@ OAB - You can. Definitely. Hair is hair. Alternatives would be ACV rinse.
Hi Sunshyne, I wear locs and I'm about to dye my hair, how should I apply this product?
ReplyDeleteHi Klynn, that's a good question. To prevent unevenness of hair color it's best to apply Porosity control to the hair shaft and ends after applying color to new growth to shield the porous areas. When processing is completed in the regrowth, pull the color through to the ends. Hope that helps.
