Have Your Say: Relaxed vs. Natural - Which Is More Versatile?

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

During one of our MANY heated hair conversations, my sister and I were discussing how Black Textured Hair is so versatile and how it can be manipulated into various hair styles whether one is natural or relaxed.

We both had our own opinions as to whether or not Natural hair is more/less versatile in comparison to Relaxed hair when it comes to various hair styles you can do. We both brought strong arguments to the discussion and finally came to an agreement.

With that being said, I thought I'd bring this discussion to the blog to see what others had to say about this. I'm curious to know that you guys think!

Do you think that Natural hair, Relaxed hair or Transitioning hair can be more flexible and versatile than the other? If so, why or why not?

  1. I don't think that one is more versatile than another; Both textures can be used to create some AMAZING unique styles.

    1. EXACTLY!! Thank you for your input. It's all about how you creative you are and what you are willing to try with your hair.

  2. We really need to stop worrying about what people are doing with THEIR hair. As long as you take care of it, you are good!

    1. No worries here. This topic was not intended to create a concern about one hair type over the other. You're right, good hair care practices and healthy hair is what's most important.

  4. I think natural is more versatile. For example, they can do a braidout on straight hair and on their natural texture hair and it comes out completely different looking both times. Relaxed hair can't do that. Or can they?' How can relaxed hair be more versatile than natural if relaxed hair is just straight even when u wet it?

    1. Great point. My braid outs natural come out much better than when my hair was relaxed. Also for me braided styles are easier on my natural hair.

    2. Can natural hair stay straight when you go outside without poofing back up?

    3. As long as I don't straighten during the summer, I don't have that issue. I have friends that straighten all year round with no issue as well. It depends on your hair and straightening technique. When I had a relaxer I stretched for long periods of time so my hair was never really straight then either.LOL!

  6. I think they are both more versatile than hair of any other ethnicity by far, but I will have to go with natural hair being a bit more versatile because it can achieve every look that relaxed hair can, but relaxed hair cannot achieve every style/look that natural hair can.

  7. natural hair has more versatility...There are natural hairstyles such as an afro that a relaxed head can not do. A natural hair girl can do any hairstyle a relax hair does--just straightened your hair

  8. I'm leaning towards natural. You can straighten your natural hair and get all therelaxed styles. Then tomorrow you can go fro. Honestly, relaxed or natural, I have zero creativity. So I think I'm probably seeing more limits to a relaxed head because all I do is put it in a ponytail.

  9. It depends on alot of factors, so in the end, it depends on the head. Either way, both are versatile.

  10. WOW What a question! for the record I am relaxed!! I feel like with relaxed hair you can do a heck of alot My hair is also long mid back length so this helps with versatile looks.I feel like its what YOU do with your OWN hair that makes "it" versatile personally. If you are good with hair and know how to style her own hair than that makes you a versatile stylist. It's honestly depends on the individual not the particular hair texture.

  11. I can say I enjoy my relaxed hair but if I had been natural I probably would have enjoyed that more because it gives you the ability to enjoy the best of both worlds. I just luv to see a Natural curls.

  12. Definitely natural hair. With natural hair, you can go from one extreme (straight) to the other (afro) quite easily and the style will look very different depending on the method used. You can rock wash-and-gos, wash-and-fros, twists, mini-twists, braidouts/twistouts on wet hair, dry hair or straightened hair, bantu knot outs, flat twists, curly fros, afro puffs, messy/textured buns, sleek buns wet sets, etc. Then if you want it to look like relaxed hair, all you have to do is straightened it and style as desired.

  13. Natural hands down! For the simple fact that I can do all styles I did with a relaxer as a natural, but I couldn't do all natural styles when I had a relaxer.
