Did you know that...
Hygral fatigue can damage the hair due to swelling and contraction of the hair during the uptake and loss of water. As a result, this process can eventually weaken the hair by causing damage to the hair cuticle and cortex.
Swelling and de-swelling of hair is one of the causes of hair damage. If the cuticle is constantly under stress, it will expose the cortex thus causing porosity issues and breakage.
The swelling of the hair shaft is limited by the presence of oil. Coconut oil can be used as a pre-wash treatment (great for preventing protein loss) to prevent the hair shaft from swelling. This may help the cuticle from being raised and exposing the cortex.
Remember that the swelling of the hair shaft can damage the hair cuticle and cortex which can eventually weaken hair.

Castor Oil Challenge is BACK + *New* Strong Roots Challenge
Castor Oil Challenge Friday, August 19, 2011
That's right! Castor Oil Challenge Part 6 is finally back for all who are looking to increase thickness and growth in their hair. I know MANY readers and Hairlista members missed this challenge, so it's back for the last quarter of 2011. Castor Oil Challenge Part 5 went out with a bang having over 1200+ members looking to achieve thicker, softer, longer hair. Come join the fun over at Hairlista.com.
This is a new Challenge that will take place on Hairlista.com this year along side the Castor Oil Challenge Pt 6. It's created by Tropic Isle Living for people who are looking for a product that will quickly make their hair grow longer, stronger, thicker and healthier. The key ingredient in this product, verses the Jamaican Black Castor Oil, is the Red Pimento Hair Growth Oil, which has been traditionally used for centuries as a folk remedy for all types of hair and scalp problems including thinning hair and alopecia.
Without a doubt, I thought this product would be great to use in a challenge environment to see what type of results people get. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about this oil. Since I've now developed problem areas (i.e. short length in nape, thinning edges due to not consistently using my satin scarf at night, pregnancy etc.) in my hair, I'm excited to try it out with all of you and see what kind of results I get :)
As a refresher, here are the ingredients: A proprietary blend of Jamaican Red Pimento Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Wheat Germ, and Organic Coconut oil
Two weeks is ample amount of time to get your Castor Oil or Strong Roots ready for the Challenge! Be sure to check here & Hairlista frequently for more details about both challenges and the different levels you can join in on.
Good Luck To ALL :)

My shower filter, by far, is one of the BEST things I've purchased for my hair this year! It was everything my hair was looking for and needing (check this post to read about my hard water issues). For my first use, I made sure I used my clarifying shampoo so that all the buildup (mineral deposits) from previous wash days wouldn't inhibit my results and how my hair would react to the water.
After my initial use, I instantly felt the difference in my hair while wet and while I was air drying. While wet, my hair was smoother in texture and softer. The water felt gentle and it didn't have an odor like before. Once my hair air dried, it felt as though the products I used actually penetrated my strands. Not to say that it didn't before, however; the water gave my products a boost in effectiveness- so it seems. My hair air dried softer than usual, smoother, very fluffy with bounce (a lot more movement than normal) and less tangles!!!
My first experience with my shower filter was a huge upgrade from what I've been accustomed too. I'm looking forward to less bad hair days and dryness now!
It's a staple :)
Chemically relaxing your hair is something that shouldn't be taken lightly, especially if you are self-relaxing. It's a serious task, therefore; one should proceed with caution at all times to avoid unnecessary consequences such as burning, irritation, breakage or even hair loss.
Below, I've outlined several tips to implement and common mistakes to avoid. I practice all of the tips listed and I really believe in them too. Just wanted to share. Hopefully they will help you!

Have you tried EVOO (Extra virgin olive oil) in your hair regimen? If not, wait no further!
When used on the hair, extra virgin olive oil can nourish, condition and improve the strength and elasticity.
Due to it's ability to penetrate the hair shaft, this rich moisturizing oil can reach the cortex of the hair, allowing the hair to feel conditioned, nourished, and healthy with each use.
Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidant vitamin E, vitamin A and helps heal dry flaky scalp, also known as dandruff.
Ways to add this oil into your hair regimen for maximum benefits:
- Preshampoo treatment - Add 2-4 tbsps of EVOO to your dry unwashed hair. Apply to the ends first. Use the rest in your scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap for 15-20mins (with or without heat). Wash and condition as usual.
- Scalp oil - Add 2 tbsps of EVOO to a applicator bottle. Place bottle in warm water to heat up. Test on wrist until desired temp is reached. Apply to the scalp and massage for 10-15 mins. The oil will help dandruff and dryness and the massage will promote growth.
- Leave-in - You can use a dab of EVOO over your leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture thus helping to retain a proper moisture balance.
- Mixed into your deep conditioner - Add 1-2 tbsps of EVOO to your desired deep conditioner for soft, conditioned, smooth hair. This is my favourite method!!

It's official. I now have access to clean chlorine free shower water! So that means wayyyy better hair days to come...I hope. It was a breeze to install. Very fast and simple. The filter lasts up to 6 months, which is a pretty long time. We got it from Home Depot.
Now, I'm excited for wash day. I really hope my hair feels a significant change in texture and softness. My hair has been very disorderly and disobedient lately (due to the hard water), so I hope this filter will aid in bringing my hair back to life.
Just wanted to share my latest purchase with you all :)
