Steaming My Hair With Coconut Oil!

Saturday, August 02, 2014

The Coconut Oil Challenge is still live on Hairlista.com. The challenge will end in less than one month (August 24th). Although, it's been quite difficult keeping up with the challenge, my hair has benefitted greatly from weekly use of Coconut oil. My hair feels stronger, softer and smoother with every use. The moist air from the steamer along with the Coconut oil are a great combo!

My favourite way of incorporating Coconut Oil into my hair regimen is by going under the steamer with it for 30 minutes. I apply the oil to dry unwashed hair. I slather it on from root to tip and then clip the ends up. No plastic cap! The steam allows my cuticles to open up and absorb the oil and all it's nutrients.  Once 30 minutes is up, I proceed to co-wash my hair with a creamy instant conditioner (lately I've been using Aussie Moist Conditioner). My hair is then full of slip making it extremely easy to detangle. Overall, I love this oil! Coconut oil really helps to add fullness and strength to my hair which comes in handy since I'm almost 8 weeks post relaxer!

What your favourite way of using Coconut oil in your regimen? What have you noticed since you've incorporated it into your hair routine?

    2. What is hygral fatigue?

    3. Hygral fatigue is the swelling and contracting of the hair strand. This causes damage in the hair shaft. Coconut oil restricts the swelling and contraction of the hair while wet.

  3. Hi Sunshyne, that's a very innovative use of coconut oil! I'll have to try it sometime!

I started using coconut oil when I heard about pre-pooing and I did it consistently for 6 months and my hair's thickness literally doubled! And my hair was also better able to retain moisture, reflect light and it was also stronger! I was restarting my HHJ at the time and it's so handy!

I've just heard about finger detangling for relaxed hair and was wondering do you still use combs?

    1. Awesome news! Sounds like your hair did a 360 :) I love hearing how something so simple as Coconut oil can do so much for our hair. I'm happy for you.

As far as fingering detangling goes, I still use my wide tooth comb; however; I always use my fingers first. It's just natural for me to finger comb before I pick up my comb.

  4. The steaming looks like a really good idea. I want to try it.
I've been using a mixture of coconut oil and olive oil to seal daily. It also goes in my shea butter mix. I love it

    1. Coconut oil mixed with Olive oil is said to be a wonderful combination as they are much more beneficial when used together.

Steaming with Coconut oil works wonders! The moist heat really helps to the Coconut oil absorb into my hair.

  8. I tried steaming with coconut oil today and my hair after I finished rinsing the deep conditioner out, my hair felt stronger. Hopefully if I continue using it with the combination of my steamer, my hair thickness will double and my hair will be even more thicker! I will be doing this for the rest of the year to see what results I get.

  9. Sunshine thank yyou for sharing healthy hair info with us..could you sit under a hair dyer and have the same effect as the steamer? How long should you sit under the dyer? and how many times a week?

    1. The pleasure is all mine. Yes, you can sit under a hooded dryer or heating cap with the coconut oil on your hair. As long as your under a heat source you'll be good to go. I sit under the steamer for 20-30mins at least once a week. Because of the coconut oil challenge, I did it twice a week.

  10. Helpful information. ...but please note that in one of your articles you made mention of using unrefined coconut oil.
I was using refined coconut oil with no results and did not even notice they had different types. When i switch to the unrefined i was amazed. Thicker, stronger and very soft hair with the perfect shine. You will not go wrong...perfect oil.

    1. Unrefined is key! Refined coconut oil is filtered therefore all the nutrients is stripped from it providing you with no added benefits. I'm happy to hear it was a hit for you and your hair.

  12. Hi,

Why do you do it on unwashed hair rather than washed?

Cant you post a picture of what your hair look like right now?

    1. Hi Lisa! I apply coconut oil on my dry hair because, hair is like a sponge, it tends to absorb products better when there's no water in the hair. Hair that is already wet will absorb less product.

    1. Coconut milk has a high affinity to hair protein so it essentially does the same thing. Glad your hair liked it. It's a great treatment.
