If you haven't heard, OLAPLEX dropped their newest product, the No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask, a few months back and it's been a hot topic ever since! Finally got my hands on it.

I'm a huge fan of OLAPLEX and this protein-free moisture mask quickly grabbed my attention. Given it's uniqueness to the product line, I was curious to know more i.e. the benefits, packaging, how it differs from other conditioners etc.

...Am I the only one?

Clearly, I had several questions that needed answers, so I reached out to my friends over at OLAPLEX and here's what they had to say about the No.8!

WHAT INSPIRED OLAPLEX TO CREATE A DEDICATED MOISTURIZING PRODUCT AND HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO PRODUCE?

Stylists and consumers truly inspired OLAPLEX N°.8. Needing a product that gave intense moisture and shine without weighing the hair down was big on the list of the hair community’s needs. The N°.8 Intense Bond Moisture Mask was a labor of love taking four years from concept to completion.

HOW DOES THE NO.8 DIFFER FROM THE OLAPLEX NO.5 CONDITIONER?

N°.5 is meant to be used as your daily conditioner, providing the hair with the main components of a conditioner as well as the repair from the active ingredient. N°.8 takes it a step further, providing the hair with extra moisture while being lightweight and leaving the hair healthy with body and fullness, as well as including the repair from the active ingredient.

WHY IS NO.8 IN AN AIR TIGHT PUMP AS OPPOSED TO A BOTTLE?

The pump in N°.8 is one of the things that make it truly unique. It is made for precision dosing and also prevents the product from weakening by not allowing water to infiltrate the formula, which often happens with other masks.

HOW IS THE NO.8 BENEFICIAL FOR RELAXED/CHEMICALLY TREATED HAIR?

As you may know, relaxers usually tend to be the strongest chemical one can use on their hair, so the risk of damage and moisture loss is something one has to be aware of and address. N°.8 works amazingly in addressing moisture loss and also helps heal the hair as well.

CAN/SHOULD THE NO.8 BE MIXED WITH ANY OTHER OLAPLEX PRODUCT?

No OLAPLEX N°.8 should be used by itself after shampooing (preferably with N°.4)

CAN YOU USE HEAT (HOODED DRYER, STEAMER, HEAT CAP) WHILE USING THE NO.8?

Heat does not affect how well OLAPLEX works, so that would be a matter of preference.

WHAT MAKES OLAPLEX NO. 8 UNIQUE FROM OTHER TRADITIONAL MOISTURIZING CONDITIONERS?

OLAPLEX N°.8 goes directly into the hair shaft; unlike most traditional masks that sit on the surface, OLAPLEX works internally, giving your hair moisture from the inside out. OLAPLEX N°.8 also gives your hair immense shine and body as well so having a moisture mask that doesn’t weigh the hair down that in itself is groundbreaking!

WHAT IS THE BEST MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO USE NO.8 FOR LASTING RESULTS?

We recommend shampooing first with N°.4 then applying N°.8 to damp hair (mid-lengths to ends). Most only require 2-4 pumps. Remember that N°.8 absorbs into the hair, so you won’t see it sitting on top of the hair strand, so less is more. Finger or comb through, allow it to sit for a minimum of 10 mins then rinse. N°.8 is designed to replace your daily conditioner on days when you feel you need more moisture.

Friday Faves are back! I rounded up my faves for the month of June and it's a mix of both Lifestyle and Beauty, all of which were definitely worth talking about and sharing - might I add. Increasing my water intake has been one of my man goals this year. This 64 oz bottle keeps me right on track to reach my daily water intake - easily. I'm obsessed with all things marble and the design is just so pretty it makes me want to drink more water daily, and it works. I shared this on my Instagram Stories several times and you guys love it too. I usually refill my Simple Modern Water Bottle 1.5x/day. This floral and feminine fragrance has been my go-to ever since I got it from the Sephora VIB Sale back in May. I caved and bought it after reading many many many positive reviews. The bold yet luxe scent makes a statement with each spray. I get tons of compliments when I wear it. More importantly, my hubby approves! YSL "Libre" Perfume by far, has the best staying power! Literally, it lasts ALL day long. Don't get me started on the beautiful and elegant black and gold packaging - my favourite combo. It's definitely one of the prettiest perfumes I own. Overall, it's a staple!

MAC LIPGLASS in "Spite"

This lip gloss gets a lot of attention. Every time I wear it whether in person or on social, I'm asked "What gloss is that?" Well here it is. Mac Lipglass in the shade "Spite". It's literally my Summer 'go-to'. It's light, glossy (of course), slightly thick with just the right amount of pigment for longevity. It's a keeper. Which reminds me, I need to re-stock ASAP!

Legit lifesaver! Got this recently from Amazon and I've been addicted to labeling everything in sight. I started creating labels for my hair care product baskets in my recent YouTube Video "Hair Product Organization - Organize With Me". It was a hit!

Been using this for the past 6 months. It's been such a gem!! Let's just say I look forward to wash days even more now. My hair has never felt this soft and smooth. "V" for Val of course :) I discovered this necklace while doing my weekly browse on Amazon. I loveeee this chain. I wear it basically, everyday. I'm obsessed with gold jewelry and this has been such a pretty addition to my outfits and everyday looks. The Initial Letter Pendant Necklace has a great weight to it and the pendant itself is q u a l i t y ! The colour hasn't changed either. Most importantly, it doesn't irritate my skin, so it's a win! What I love most is that it can be dressed up or down. Again, I'm obsessed with it.

SPORTS RESEARCH BIOTIN (5000mcg)

Sis, taking this particular Biotin has been the BEST 'Biotin experience' I've EVER had! I've been taking this since March 2021 and I'm impressed. Zero breakouts. Nails growing and feeling stronger. New growth growing, feeling soft and poppin'!

May Q&A - Your Hair Questions Answered!

Great news.

Q&A is back in session and it's a good one. As always, I like to host Instagram Hair Care Question and Answer sessions each month and the questions that I don't get a chance to answer on IG, I answer here on the blog. It's something I always look forward to, so let's get to it!

DO YOU MOISTURIZE AND SEAL EVERY NIGHT OR EVERY OTHER NIGHT?

Typically, I moisturize and seal every other day. But if my hair feels like it needs a slight moisture boost, I will moisturize. Always listen to your hair. If it needs moisture, moisturize it.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR ENDS MOISTURIZED? MINE SEEM TO NEED LOC DAY/NIGHT?

I moisturize using my water-based moisturizer and oil to seal. Perhaps you need to change your method (instead of LOC, try LCO) or the products you are using. I find that doing the LCO method (Liquid, Creme, Oil) instead of LOC locks in MUCH more moisture and you won't feel the need to moisturize twice daily. If you're still noticing extreme dryness, try clarifying your hair and ends using a clarifying shampoo (2x lather), use a sulfate-free shampoo (1x lather), then follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner (zero protein) and see if that helps to restore moisture. Ensure that you are using quality deep conditioners to help restore hydration into your strands.

ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR SWIMMER'S SHAMPOO OR SHAMPOO WITH EDTA? NEVER HEARD BEFORE NOW.

Sally Beauty and Amazon.com carries ION Swimmer's Shampoo which is great for removing chlorine build up and mineral deposits off of the hair. It's perfect for pool or beach days.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO USE CLARIFYING SHAMPOO? REGULAR SHAMPOO AFTER?

Lather 2x/ with Clarifying shampoo (focus on scalp, hair and ends), then follow up with a sulfate-free shampoo - lather 1x. You'll see and feel the difference!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLARIFY YOUR HAIR?

Once a month.

IS IT ADVISABLE TO USE DIFFERENT SHAMPOOS IN ONE WASH DAY?

It depends. If I'm clarifying my hair, then I will use two different shampoo's. Otherwise, I stick to using ONE shampoo each wash day.

HOW DO I RELAX MY HAIR TO CORRECT UNDER PROCESSED HAIR FROM MY LAST RELAXER PLEASE?

I haven't done a corrective relaxer at home, however, based on what I've read and seen, you would apply the relaxer to your new growth as you normally would for a touch-up. Your new growth requires more time to process, so tackle that area first. Then, you would focus on the under processed areas by specifically applying relaxer to any area that seems under processed - kind of like a spot treatment. Smooth the relaxer on those specific areas - as needed - until you've reached your desired straightness, rinse, neutralize etc.

DO YOU HAVE AN OUTLINE REGIME OF YOUR WASH DAYS AND RELAXER DAYS?

WHEN DO YOU BLOW DRY YOUR HAIR?

I rarely blow dry my hair. I only use heat when I'm freshly relaxed and at that point, I skip the blow drying step and go straight to flat ironing. I don't see the need for double the heat. However, I may try blow drying instead of flat ironing when I'm freshly relaxed - I'm curious to see the results.

WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU LIKE FROM MIELLE?

I love the Mongongo Oil Hydrating Conditioner - Protein Free. Amazing and smells divine.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU DO A PROTEIN TREATMENT?

I use a light protein every other week.

PROTEIN TREATMENTS (EX. APHOGEE 2 STEP VS. ORS HAIR MAYO) WHICH ONE IS BETTER?

I don't use hard protein treatments like Aphogee 2 Step. I had a horrible experience with it years back and I refuse to relive it. I prefer ORS Hair Mayo because it provides great strength and softness to my hair.

WHAT TYPE OF MOISTURIZING DEEP CONDITIONERS DO YOU RECOMMEND?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RELAXED?

Since grade 6.

THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, MANY NATURALS HAVE BEEN REVERTING BACK TO RELAXED HAIR? WHY SO?

I made a video about this back in 2020 when I first noticed the trend. Based on the comments that I receive - almost daily - many naturals are fed up of the endless detangling, long wash days, lack of length retention etc. Too, many were unaware of how to properly take care of their relaxed hair, years back, so naturals are revisiting relaxed hair as more healthy hair care information is now available. Honestly, I'm loving the growth of the Relaxed Hair Community right now!

HOW LONG DO YOU STRETCH YOUR RELAXER?

Usually 10-12 weeks.

AFTER I MOISTURIZE MY HAIR ALWAYS FEELS SO WEIGHED DOWN - ANY TIPS?

It could be the moisturizer or the amount that you're using - maybe the product or your application is too heavy for your hair type. If your moisturizer is too heavy, opt for light moisturizers, perhaps even a leave-in conditioner i.e. As I Am Leave-in, TGIN Green Tea Super Moist Leave-in etc., and a light weight oil i.e. grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil to seal, would be best. Also, try spacing out your moisturize and seal sessions - every other day or every 3 days.

WHAT IS THE LONGEST YOU HAVE STRETCHED YOUR RELAXER?

14/15 weeks was the longest I've stretched my relaxer.

HAVE YOU EVER USED THE MANE CHOICE BOOSTING KIT?

Never tried it.

IS IT OKAY TO LEAVE ON A PROTECTIVE STYLE FOR LIKE THREE WEEKS MAX?

It depends on the amount of manipulation. For example, if it's box braids for 3 weeks, I don't think the protective style is worth it for that short duration of time. You're better off using a wig.

DO YOU CONSIDER BRAIDS A PROTECTIVE STYLE, WHEN STRETCHING RELAXERS?

Again, it depends on how the braids are installed, the size, the tightness etc. Some protective styles can do the exact opposite and cause a setback rather than encourage length retention. Overall, braids are a great protective style but be cautious of how the braids are installed and amount of manipulation required for it. Safe and effective protective styling is key!
