Joico K-PAK Deep Penetrating Reconstructor

Friday, July 03, 2009

Promises: Joico's original intensive protein reconstructor for dry and damaged hair rebuilds and improves the structure of hair. pH 4.5-5.5. Contains QUADRAMINE COMPLEX, an exclusive blend of low molecular weight and size proteins (MWS 150-2500). This balance of 19 essential amino acids (the building blocks of hair) adheres quickly and effectively to ensure maximum protection and reconstruction from the cuticle to the cortex. Color Safe.

Directions: Apply to damp hair. Leave in for 5 mins. Rinse.

Ingredients: Water, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Mineral Oil, Glycol Stearate, PEG-8 Distearate, Sodium Chloride, Ceteth 2, Hydrolyzed Hair Keratin, Laurdimonium Hydroxpropyl Hydrolyzed Keratin, Myristyl Myristate, Citric Acid, Fragrance, Sorbic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Yeast Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Keratin amino Acids, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

The Truth: WOW, OMGosh I adore Joico DPR!! Remember back when I did a Mini Product Haul at Trade Secrets? well I've been using this protein treatment in my hair ever since. I use it as a prepoo on dry hair or after I clarify/shampoo followed up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. I've been alternating with this & Vital Hair Mayo weekly - since I've "up'd" my protein to once a week. To break it down, I use VHM once week and J-DPR the other (2x/month). I'm always getting some form of protein weekly.

The scent is sooo yummy, it reminds me of Cinnamon and banana. The texture is very light and fluffy (because of the yeast..I think) making it extremely easy to apply to the hair - even dry hair. Because it's so potent and spreads easily, you don't need to use much. I still have my 11oz bottle and I purchased it over 2 months ago. It lasts a very long time. Upon rinsing out, my hair feels incredibly soft, how is this the case? I have no clue!! I had to remind myself that this is a protein reconstructor so I must follow up with a moisture DC. Every time I use it, my hair noticeably increases in strength, elasticity, thickness and looks healthier!! I think this is due to the Human Hair Keratin ← the best of the best...it's rebuilding and reconstructing my hair. I highly recommend this conditioner to those wanting a high quality protein treatment in their regimen, fine haired ladies and those who want thicker hair.

I will be repurchasing this product in the future. I use this every other week without fail as part of the Protein Is My BFF Club on Hairlista Inc. Some say this reconstructor is compareable to Aphogee 2 min., I haven't tried Aphogee 2 min in the longest time..I can't really comment on that (I may try it now, just to compare, LOL).

Price: $26-33 CAD, 11.1 oz.

Hairlicious Rating: (5/5) Excellent

  1. Hello,
I am a big fan of your website, Hairlicious. I used Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor after rinsing out my relaxer but just before neutralizing. I kept on touching my hair after the relaxing process; I couldn't believe how silky, stronger and thicker my hair felt. My hair has never felt that way. I know you recommend low manipulation of hair, but on that day, I couldn't stop messing with my hair. I researched a lot of hair care website, and I find yours to be precise, detailed and overall, very user-friendly. I thank you for such an informative website.

  3. Yes, the KPAK line is wonderful. It does leave your hair feeling soft and easy to detangle. I didn't have that crispy protein feeling. Great review! It reminded me of bananas, as well.

  4. I have had the Joico K-pak line for a while now. It does make my hair feel very nice, but I didn't use often for fear of too much protein. But since I have signed up to Hairlista I realized that I was lacking in protein and moisture so if you can only guess my hair is a mess lol. But things are looking up for me now that I have found your blog and website. But I have a question though...how long do you leave it on when doing it as a pre-poo?

  5. @ Anonymous - Thanks for checking out my blog. I'm glad you like it here. I have to agree, Joico DPR quickly became a staple for me. I love it dearly. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I'll be using kpak as a mid protein step the next time I relax.

@ Demetria - Oh really? thanks for letting me know. I was very curious to know the difference between the two. I had a feeling that Joico would be better anyway..lol.

@ LaQT - Yes, my hair did feel soft. I thought I was the only one. Nice to know you experienced the same thing =]

@ Miss Kida - A proper moisture/protein balance is vital. I'm glad you realized that. I usually leave it on for 20-30mins with a plastic cap, no heat on dry hair.

  6. I have tried this on dry hair and wet hair and I must say that I like it better on wet hair because when I used it on dry hair it made my hair hard to comb even after I used shampoo. I also like it better than aphogee 2 min reconstructor because my hair is stronger and looks much thicker.

  8. Sunshyne, I'm SOOOO happy right now w/my hair. About 2 weeks ago, my hair got damaged so badly that when I combed it(using a wide tooth comb), I would get clumps of hair in my comb. I got so scared that I thought I was going bald(talk about paranoia). My only solution until I was able to purchase the all famous KPAK reconstructor was doing the egg protein regimen. Even after that(and I used EVOO w/honey), I got the same results(I really wanted some KPAK then). At last, I was able to get my hands on KPAK(SOOO happy). My next wash I used it w/EVOO and honey, followed up w/moisture conditioner, and the results...WOW!!! I'm completely blown away by my hair. It feels so much softer and stronger. I can comb my hair and run my fingers through it and barely get any broken strands at all. I can actually pull on my strands and they wont break. It's just a wonderful feeling. I definitely got some hair shopping to do now.
Thank God for your website and keep up the good work.
    Best wishes!! :]

  10. Ladies, I live in Midtown Toronto and today i got a huge DEAL..I was looking to buy some JoicoK-Pak because i needed a good protein conditioner.. I was surprised to see the price of a regular 300 ml bottle was $18.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart!!!..so, money being tight, I decided i would use a lesser brand :*(.. i walked further down the isle and i got to the end (across from the pharmacy area) and i remembered there are usually some brand name haircare with drastically reduced prices (like Biosilk, Nexxus)..Lo and behold, i find a ONE LITER bottle of Joico K-Pak Reconstructer Conditioner for, wait for it....$14.99!!! I swear. The Shoppers Drug Mart is right on the conner of Eglington West and Spadina rd in Midtown.

ps..another great hair deal for the Biosilk ladies out there..i found a 300 ml sized Biosilk Silk serum at Costco in Scarborough (Eglington East and Warden) for $15.00.. Nice Medium Sized bottle..
