Got Hard Water?

Does your hair consistently feel...

Rough?
Dry?
Tangled?
Dull?

Regardless of the products you are using? even if you've clarified your hair? You could be suffering with hard water. I know I am :(

I recently moved to a new subdivision and I no longer have my soft water system that ran throughout my whole house. If you are not familiar with soft water, it is the TRUTH!! It's like no other. It leaves your hair and skin so moisturized. I step out of the shower and my skin is hydrated. Lotion or oil on my body was not a necessity like it is now. Without my soft water, I feel extra dry. My skin and hair feel different!! I notice that my hair feels unusually tangled, dry and rough all the time if I don't use my trusty Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo FIRST. This shampoo is specifically formulated for those who have hard water. It's extremely effective in hard water areas. Try it out if you haven't already! You won't regret it.

I'm looking into getting a temporary fix until I can find a soft water company I like. In the meantime, I will try to find a shower head filter so that I don't have to experience this :(

Here are the benefits of soft water:

  • Soft, clean skin.
  • Soft silky hair.
  • Manageable hair.
  • Soap lathers easily.
  • Reduces/eliminates limp and lifeless hair.
  • Lesser quantities of soap, shampoo etc. & increases the efficiency.
Here are clues that your water is hard:
  • Dishes have water spots.
  • Soap won't lather well.
  • Clothes look dingy.
  • Bathtub ring.
  • Dry Skin.
  • Tangled, rough hair.
  • Rust-colored stains on your clothes, silverware, or porcelain fixtures.

Best ways to tackle hard water:

  • Clarify or Chelate your hair often to remove the overabundance of minerals.
  • Regularly use a shampoo specifically for hard water i.e. Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo, ION Hard water shampoo etc.
  • Use pH balanced products to keep the hair cuticles laying flat thus smooth and soft hair.
  • Get a shower filter.

  2. Must be a hard (no pun intended) adjustment to deal with hard water after being used to soft water. Thankfully I live in NYC where we have soft water and the 2nd best tap water in the U.S.A shower filter will be your best option IMO.

  3. Hi Sunshyne,
I came across your blog while watching some of your youtube videos and now I'm hooked!!! I have to say this post on hard water is so applicable to me since I recently moved to Qatar and the water here has just been drying out both my hair and skin. I am taking your advice and buying the Ion Hard water shampoo and some of the other products you recommend. I have also started to daily moisturize and seal and I'm going to do my first co-wash today! I'd never head of co-washing before but if I could get my hair to look half as healthy as yours I'd be happy! LOL! Thanks so much for the wonderful hair advice and I'm definitely going to keep following your blog.

  6. I have this same problem too! I live in dry Arizona so I get a double whammy of damaging heat from the sun and VERY hard water to go along with it! It's horrible here.

  7. Malibu has a great line for people with well water/hard water. They offer a system kit that includes a shampoo, conditioner and four packets of hard water weekly demineralizer to combat the effects of the high mineral content. If your hair has gotten really bad, check out their Malibu Crystal Gel Treatment. That gets EVERYTHING bad out of your hair. Their products are all-natural and safe for color-treated hair. @ abi19 - Thank you for watching my videos and reading my blog. I'm happy that you like it. Good luck to you and the hard water issues. I hope you solve it soon :)
@ Youniquee - So I guess your hair is immune to it. That's interesting.
@ Camille - Oh no! Take the steps I listed before. Don't suffer with hard water if you don't have to.
@ Precious - Use the chelating shampoo 2-3 times a month if you suffer from hard water. It will help to remove the minerals so that your products and penetrate better.

  11. How would i find pH balanced products?

    ReplyDelete
  12. @ Lois3 - The best way to find pH balanced products is to look for "citric acid" or "lactic acid" in the ingredients. They are acidic thus lowering the pH of the product. Some products actually state that they are pH balance so that will help :)
