I recently flat ironed my hair and posted a photo on my Instagram account. I got a ton of DM's regarding the products I used and how was I able to get my hair so smooth and straight! Not to worry, I will share all the details below.
First things first, I don't flat iron often! I flat iron typically 1-2x with every relaxer, which is every 10-12 weeks. I maintain my flat ironed style for approximately 5-7 days. I maintain my straight look by lightly moisturizing the very ends of my hair (no oil as it would weigh it down) and wrapping it every night with a satin scarf.
....now on to the products I use:
1. Small wide tooth comb - I use the small wide tooth comb AFTER I use the big wide tooth comb. This helps to remove any tangles that I may have missed with the big wide tooth comb. This comb also helps to ensure shed hair is removed. I use the tail part of the comb for parting and sectioning my hair.
2. Big wide tooth comb - After I wash, deep condition and air dry my hair, I thoroughly detangle with this seamless wide tooth comb to remove tangles. It works like a charm!
3. Sedu Flat Iron - I did an unboxing of this flat iron on my YouTube Channel. It is by far the BEST flat iron I've used on my relaxed hair. The 1 1/2" plates glide through my hair with ease and straighten my hair perfectly and quickly with just ONE pass. I love this flat iron because I'm able to set the temperature to whatever degree I desire. I typically leave the temp around 350-380 degrees. Because of the wide plates, I'm able to flat iron my MBL hair faster ending the entire process in approximately 40-45mins.
4. Hair Clips - These clips help to section off my hair so that I can focus on one section at a time. I use about 2-3 clips every time I flat iron. It's a must.
5. Tresemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protectant - This right here is the BUSINESS!! This heat protectant not only protects my strands from heat damage but it really smooths out my cuticles allowing them to lay flat after I'm done flat ironing! It doesn’t weigh my hair down AT ALL!! It actually leaves it light and fluffy. The scent is so light and refreshing - like a fruity/floral scent - making my hair smell so fresh and clean. It has made its mark in my straightening routine and it's not going anywhere!
6. ORS Olive Oil Edge Control - The last step! This edge control is perfect for laying down my edges. I get great hold for hours with no residue or flakes. I love it!
7. Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm - This moisturizing treatment is the PERFECT treatment for bringing out smooth, moisturized yet strong hair for a bomb flat iron. No joke! This deep treatment smooths my hair like no other making the cuticle lay flat. The slip assists in detangling my strands in prep for flat ironing. First I shampoo with a sulfate free shampoo, then I follow up with this treatment for 5-10 minutes in the shower. I rinse and then move on to my leave-in conditioner and heat protectant (pictured above) - that's it. My flat ironed hair is moisturized, strengthened, smoothed and frizz-free as a result of this treatment balm! I can't see my straightening routine without it!!
Oh! You're probably wondering, "Don't you blow dry your hair ?" Well I don't blow dry my hair unless I'm several weeks post relaxer, otherwise I just air dry and then flat iron. The way I look at it is that my hair is already straight, why add more heat to it? Too, by skipping the blow drying step I get way more volume in my hair.
*Not pictured*: My One and Only Argan Oil! I use a small amount of product per section prior to flat ironing for extra smoothness and sheen. Not to mention, it's anti-frizz protection holds up very well. It works perfectly every time!
There you have it! What products/tools are essential in your straightening routine?
I think it's safe to say that wash day was a success!
Let me first start off by saying that I've missed my flat ironed hair. I have no issues with my air dried hair 95% of the time, but it's been months since "heat" has touched my strands and it definitely feels good!
My wash day began with a shampoo session with ORS Olive Oil Sulfate Free Shampoo and then I deep conditioned for 30 mins with heat using Keracare Humecto Conditioner mixed with my favourite oil combo; Avocado oil, Coconut oil and Olive oil.
I air dried my hair with a little bit of Creme of Nature Argan Oil Buttermilk Leave-In and then I began to generously spray my hair and ends with my TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray.
I didn't blow dry my hair while it was damp, I just waited until my hair was completely air dried. I then began to section my hair off and flat iron with my 2" Sedu Flat Iron (max. 2 passes through my hair).
Here are my results below:
My hair felt soft, shiny, and smooth as predicted when using Keracare Humecto and Tresemme Keratin Heat Protection Spray. My hair was well behaved let me tell you! With the help of my deep conditioning session, I was able to flat iron my hair in less than 1 hour (approx. 45 mins) - no tangles!
I had a significant trim back in February 2017. My stylist, at the time, took off more than I asked of him and my hair was basically at or slightly above BSL (bra strap length). I was not happy nor did I even bother to take a photo - I was upset. Right now, I'm significantly passed BSL, at MBL but pretty much close to WL again.
After that horrible experience, I just vowed to myself that I will not go back to my old stylist and just grow out my hair as quickly as possible. Moving forward, I plan on trimming little by little (1/4 - 1/2 and inch) with every relaxer rather than every 6 months.
Just had to share...
Okay Hairlistas so this is my first length check for 2016! Woot woot :) I know I know, I haven't done a length check in a while. I noticed that since I made my decision to maintain Mid Back Length my length checks decreased because I'm "maintaining" now.
This year, I think I'm pretty close to waist length - post trim. Yay!!! My hair has slightly increased in thickness. I'm attributing the thickness increase to my GNC Hair Skin & Nails Soft Chew Vitamins. These soft chews have been the only 'new' thing I've incorporated into my hair regimen - nothing else! I still use the same staple products, techniques, and regimen. As I mentioned before, these vitamins have a ton of Biotin (3000 mcg) in them, which helps to promote hair growth and thickness.
Over the years, my relaxed hair has become much more resilient due to my consistent usage of protein treatments, coconut oil pre-poos and moisturizing & sealing daily! I try to leave my hair alone as much as possible (aka protective styling) and use my fingers or wide tooth seamless comb when styling my hair - you won't catch me using a fine tooth comb! My hair has become predictable in a sense that there's no 'guess work' when it comes to maintaining my hair. It has decreased and I'm okay with that!
Overall, I'm loving my relaxed hair and I'm happy with my length for #Summer16 !!!!
What's the best "go-to" style when you're tired of your old limp flat ironed hair? CURLSSS!!
My hair is approximately 7 days post flat iron (I try to stretch it as long as possible) and I was just bored of the constant straight look! I wanted some curls and volume without the use of extra heat, so I grabbed my trusty 1" inch satin pillow rollers, my Creme of Nature Argan Oil Setting Foam Lotion and went to work! Side note - if you know me, I'm not a fan of using excessive rollers or flexi rods in my hair to achieve a certain look. I like to take the minimalistic route and use just enough rollers to cover my hair.
Products/Items I used:
1) Creme of Nature Argan Oil Foam Setting Lotion - I used the Creme of nature foam setting lotion sparingly as I didn't want to saturate my ends to the point of reversion. I used half a pump (or less) per section to set my curls overnight.
2) 1" Satin Pillow Rollers - I used a total of 9 rollers all over. I placed a satin pillow roller in the front of my hair for extra curl and volume to frame my face. For the rest of my head, I placed 4 satin rollers per side (8 rollers in the back and 1 in the front). To achieve the curl, I wrapped my hair around the satin roller, to create that coily "look", starting from the mid shaft first - not the ends. The satin material prevented my ends from frizz and drying out.

My Hair Before:

3) Satin Scarf & Bonnet - I covered my hair with a satin scarf to keep my hairline tamed. I then used my bonnet, for extra measures, to keep everything under control while I sleep.
4) Hicks Edge Control - In the morning, I used a little bit of my Hicks edge control to tame my baby hairs down. I used a toothbrush to smooth it down for all day hold.
Here are my results:
I enjoyed this style so much and I must say it was effortless! My curls lasted pretty much all day long, although they dropped slightly. The hold I received from the CON Argan Oil Foam held up pretty well without feeling dry or crunchy.
As I mentioned before, the satin pillow rollers prevented my hair/ends from drying out, which was a bonus! My hair had bounce, shine and body which is exactly what I wanted to achieve! Most importantly, it's heat free, which means guilt free :)
Have you used satin pillow rollers in your hair? How did you like it?
Hey Hairlistas!
In this video I share with you how I "dress up" my old flat ironed hair. In the video my hair was 7 days post flat iron. Usually around 5-7 days my flat ironed hair tends to look a bit dull. Adding these cute accessories and a simple flat twist adds life to my hair allowing me to stretch-out my flat ironed style a bit longer.
Thanks for watching!!

Video: Irresistible Me Clip In Hair Extensions Install + Review
Flat Ironed Hair Saturday, December 12, 2015
The lovely people over at Irresistible Me sent me these hair extensions to "test run" and see if I liked them. Truth be told, I've never worn clip in hair extensions before. I was slightly hesitant to try them out as the texture was silky and shiny, which is the opposite of my relaxed hair.
After installing the hair clip ins in my flat ironed hair (6 clip ins total), my initial thoughts and reservations quickly disappeared! I was so impressed at how well they blended in with my hair and how easy it was to install/remove.
Not to mention, the clip ins were tangle free and light weight - my hair didn't feel weighed down; however, it added extra body/fullness to my relaxed hair!
Here are the details on the hair:
- 100 % Royal Remy Human Hair
- 1B Natural Black
- 18" inches in length
- 200g of Thickness
Here are a few photos on the packaging and the difference sizes I used in my hair.

Have you tried clip-ins before? Do you like them? Let me know your thoughts :)
In this video I share with you how I blow dry and flat iron my relaxed hair. I flat iron my hair once every 3-4 months. I always do 1-2 “passes” through my new growth and 1 “pass” through my hair so that my hair maintains fullness and volume.

Remember my post about my New Hoshi Shears? Well I finally got a chance to trim my ends (with the help of my sister - of course!).
Let me be the first to tell you that these shears are absolutely wonderful! To my surprise, they sliced through my hair with ease, not to mention they left behind a crisp, clean and blunt hemline making my ends appear fuller and thicker.
These shears definitely lived up to their promises. They are made for wet/dry blunt cutting and that's exactly what I experienced. I'm so pleased with my trim and new shears.
Check out my results below!
These are my ends after 6 months of not trimming.
These are my ends after trimming with my new Hoshi shears. I was a tad bit nervous so we didn't trim off a lot :)
How often do you trim your ends? Do you trim on schedule or whenever you see thinness/split ends?
If you follow me on Instagram (@hairlicious) you would have seen my length check photo above. I apologize for the struggle that's taking place in the photo, but that was the best "non-blurry" photo I took while I was on-the-go....LOL. My hair is straighten via blow dryer and flat ironed. I also got my ends trimmed.
It's been months since I had my hair flat ironed. I missed it :( I think I flat ironed my hair twice last year. That was it! I absolutely love the sleekness and smoothness of my hair. I'm still maintaining mid-back length. It's crazy the amount of shrinkage I have when I wash and air dry my hair..it so deceiving!
Strictly ORS Olive Oil products (Sulfate-free shampoo and Replenishing deep conditioner) were used to create this look. I probably won't flat iron again until my next relaxer i.e. end of March early April and at that point I'll probably flat iron again.
Just wanted to share :)
