July 2009 Hit's and Misses

Well for me...

Hit:

1. S-Curl No Drip Activator as a leave-in conditioner! This stuff absorbs way better on wet hair leaving your hair incredibly soft, moisturized and fluffy when dry. Highly recommend for those with 4a/b/c texlaxed hair.

Revisit:
1. Aussie Moist as a co-wash. I adore this conditioner. I used to use it all the time early '08!! It's up there with Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship conditioner. I'm going to be using it for the Summer 2009 Co-wash Challenge on Hairlista.

What were your hits & misses for this month?

What about any revisits (products that worked well for you in the past & you tried it again with the same/better results)?

The Truth: I know what you`re thinking, `Why are you using a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair and you don`t have color in your hair?` I use these products for the simple fact that it`s geared towards chemically treated hair, and since my hair is relaxed it`s perfect as relaxed hair tends to be dry, fragile and damaged.

This shampoo (sulfate free) has been in rotation with Creme of Nature Detangling shampoo since late April '09. Every time I use it, it makes my hair slightly stiff and strong but quickly softens up afterward, making my hair feel very moist & balanced. I also notice an increase in thickness whenever I use the shampoo. I prefer to use the conditioner as a deep conditioner with heat for 25-30mins. I notice minimal breakage when I use these products together. My hair stays hydrated all day long. Since these products have a low pH, my cuticles lay flat allowing my hair to feel silky smooth & shiny.

The only downside to the conditioner is that, I need to mix it with oil (EVOO) in order to get the detangling abilities needed for my hair. Also, these products normally go for $30-40 (expensive) at Trade Secrets, sometimes you can get it on sale for half price. It`s a hit and miss. Overall, I like them both! I love the fact that they both contain several botanical extracts, they`re pH balanced & vegan. These products do exactly what they say they are supposed to do. They are staples!

Price: $20 CAD each, 33.8 fl.oz

Hair Question: Protective Styles For Neck Length Hair

Question:
"My hair is a little past NL, it doesn't fit into buns properly...it actually looks ridiculous....can you suggest another protective style for neck length hair?"
Advice: The answer is quick and simple. Neck length hair doesn't necessarily need to be protected in the form of buns. The hair is not long enough to the point where it's brushing against clothing and other elements causing breakage, so there's no real need to begin protective styling as yet. Once the hair is shoulder length and beyond, then you can begin to protective style the hair/ends.

In the meantime, opt for low manipulation styles i.e. twist outs, braid outs, braids, pin curls, wigs, weave etc. These styles will add more character to your do. If you're not feeling the options above, you can always add cute accessories i.e. headbands, pin up your ends in a fancy clip and go!

Let's Chat: Got Intense Shine?

Dull lack luster hair is something that we all don't like and try to improve on throughout our Hair Journey's.

Dry dull looking hair is normally the result of poor diet, lack of moisture, porous hair, chemical treatments etc.

I know there are a lot of products on the market nowadays that don't live up to their promises, so ladies, let me ask you this....

What products and/or techniques give YOUR hair intense shine?

How do you do it?

How long does it last?

Castor Oil Benefits For Hair

Did you know that...

The germicidal, insecticidal and fungicidal properties of Ricin/Ricinoleic acid in Castor oil protect the scalp and hair from microbial and fungal infections, the two prime causes for hair loss.

So, just to put it simple, Castor oil cleans the scalp of any impurities that would inhibit maximum growth.

The fatty acids in it nourish the hair and prevent the scalp from drying by retaining moisture.

As you may or may not know, Castor Oil is a humectant and acts the same way as glycerin and honey. For all the newbies out there, humectants have the ability to draw moisture from the air.

After I apply Jamaican Black Castor Oil to my scalp, I notice my hair retaining moisture even better. The Castor oil gives my hair a nice healthy glow as well.

Have Your Say: Reconstructors

Sunshyne

Joico K-PAK Deep Penetrating Reconstructor

Promises: Joico's original intensive protein reconstructor for dry and damaged hair rebuilds and improves the structure of hair. pH 4.5-5.5. Contains QUADRAMINE COMPLEX, an exclusive blend of low molecular weight and size proteins (MWS 150-2500). This balance of 19 essential amino acids (the building blocks of hair) adheres quickly and effectively to ensure maximum protection and reconstruction from the cuticle to the cortex. Color Safe.

Directions: Apply to damp hair. Leave in for 5 mins. Rinse.

Ingredients: Water, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Mineral Oil, Glycol Stearate, PEG-8 Distearate, Sodium Chloride, Ceteth 2, Hydrolyzed Hair Keratin, Laurdimonium Hydroxpropyl Hydrolyzed Keratin, Myristyl Myristate, Citric Acid, Fragrance, Sorbic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Yeast Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Keratin amino Acids, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

The Truth: WOW, OMGosh I adore Joico DPR!! Remember back when I did a Mini Product Haul at Trade Secrets? well I've been using this protein treatment in my hair ever since. I use it as a prepoo on dry hair or after I clarify/shampoo followed up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. I've been alternating with this & Vital Hair Mayo weekly - since I've "up'd" my protein to once a week. To break it down, I use VHM once week and J-DPR the other (2x/month). I'm always getting some form of protein weekly.

The scent is sooo yummy, it reminds me of Cinnamon and banana. The texture is very light and fluffy (because of the yeast..I think) making it extremely easy to apply to the hair - even dry hair. Because it's so potent and spreads easily, you don't need to use much. I still have my 11oz bottle and I purchased it over 2 months ago. It lasts a very long time. Upon rinsing out, my hair feels incredibly soft, how is this the case? I have no clue!! I had to remind myself that this is a protein reconstructor so I must follow up with a moisture DC. Every time I use it, my hair noticeably increases in strength, elasticity, thickness and looks healthier!! I think this is due to the Human Hair Keratin ← the best of the best...it's rebuilding and reconstructing my hair. I highly recommend this conditioner to those wanting a high quality protein treatment in their regimen, fine haired ladies and those who want thicker hair.

I will be repurchasing this product in the future. I use this every other week without fail as part of the Protein Is My BFF Club on Hairlista Inc. Some say this reconstructor is compareable to Aphogee 2 min., I haven't tried Aphogee 2 min in the longest time..I can't really comment on that (I may try it now, just to compare, LOL).

Price: $26-33 CAD, 11.1 oz.
