Luster's Scurl "No Drip" Activator Moisturizer
Curls, Waves & Natural Hair With Vitamin B5

I get a lot of questions about Scurl No Drip on a weekly basis. Many ladies are curious as to why I use this product, how I use this product, the benefits and if I like it more than Wave Nouveau! Well this blog will explain ALL OF THAT! :)

S-Curl Activator & Moisturizer may be used daily to maintain and condition your curly hair style. It contains Glycerin and Vitamin B5, which together eliminate breakage and keep your curls soft, healthy and with a lasting sheen. This special "No Drip" Formula allows you to use S-Curl Activator without fear of ruining your clothes or pillow cases.

S-Curl Activator & Moisturizer can be used daily by the entire family and will not leave greasy build-up.

Directions: Hold bottle about six inches from hair. Spray evenly over the entire head, massage completely through, then style. Use daily to maintain proper moisture balance.

Ingredients:
Water, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Acetamide MEA, Ceteth-20, Olealkonium Chloride, Stearalkonium Chloride, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Simethicone, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance.

Why I use this product:
  • Quenches my thirsty 4b/c hair.
  • Very easy to find i.e. Local beauty supply store.
  • Conditions and softens my new growth and hair
  • Eliminates breakage very well
  • Multi-purpose product
  • Very easy to apply to the hair (thin consistency)
  • No strong scent
  • Limited silicones
  • No protein whatsoever
  • Can be used all 4 seasons

How I use this product:

I use this product 3 ways in my regimen.

1. Daily Moisturizer:

I am relaxed and I moisturize & seal twice a day (all year round) i.e. Morning and night. Even though this product was intended for Jherri curls/texturizers, it can also be used on natural, relaxed or texlaxed ladies for a boost in moisture. I part my hair in 6 sections. I spray 1 pump in my hand and then apply it to the section i.e. 1 pump per section. Then I proceed to seal my hair, normally I use Hot Six Oil with Scurl (love this combo). I do not end up with wet hair.

2. Leave-in Conditioner:

After washing & deep conditioning, or co-washing, I use Scurl No Drip as a leave-in conditioner. I've been doing this for well over a year now and it's a staple of mine. It leaves my hair very moist, smooth and soft. Don't fall into the propaganda, you can turn your moisturizer into a leave-in conditioner :) I spray my entire hairline, roots and nape first. I also pile my hair on top of my head and spray my ends. I then run my fingers through my hair to massage the product in and proceed to air dry then style i.e. buns, braid outs, flat iron etc. Then I will moisturize and seal after it's completely dry.

3. New growth softener:

I religiously spray Scurl in my new growth around week number 6-7 into my relaxer stretch. This product helps to hydrate my roots and strengthen my demarcation line to eliminate breakage. It's the ultimate new growth softener and curl enhancer, therefore making my hair more manageable.

Benefits of Using Scurl No Drip:
  • No protein
  • Has Provitamin B5 (adds volume & thickens hair)
  • Extremely Moisturizing
  • Softens hair
  • Helps eliminate breakage
  • Gives subtle sheen
  • Can be used daily
  • Can be used to moisturize your hair under braids, sew-ins etc.
  • Naturals and relaxed heads can use this product (relaxed ladies don't sleep on this)
Do I like it better than Wave Nouveau: Yes! I can't believe I'm saying this, but honestly, it's true! I actually use my Scurl No Drip far more than I use my Wave Nouveau moisturizer. I still use Wave Nouveau, but if I had to recommend a great multi-purpose product to anyone on their hair journey, especially if you are on a budget, I would suggest Scurl No Drip in a flash!!

EDIT TO ADD:
This product can be used in the winter. Many people feel like they can't use glycerin based products in the winter but everyone's hair is different. I have no problems using Scurl or Wave nouveau in the winter. There may be a slight chance that your hair can get dry from using glycerin in the winter since it's main purpose is to draw moisture from the air into your hair. Typically there's no moisture in the air in the winter months, therefore it could start to draw moisture out from your hair. This may or may not be the case for you.

  2. Ok I'm glad you explained how you use S-curl. I have been using it for a few months and I was still experiencing breakage, but now I see it may be that I am putting too much in my hair. I section it and put 6-7 pumps in my hair

  3. I've also realized that I prefer S-Curl over Wave Nouveau just recently. I find S-Curl lighter and easier to apply. It's my #1 NG softener and it really does work. I also start using it at 6 weeks post up until my relaxer date. It's great! Personally, I prefer using it in the winter because in the summer glycerin based products make my hair poofy (I am texlaxed). Thanks for the review! I totally agree...

  4. Yes I use Scurl in the winter as well and I haven't experienced any dryness in my hair. It works for me so I continue using it.

  5. I bought the wave nouveau last week because I knew that's what you're using (you are my mentor). Now that I know that you prefer the s-curl, I'm going to sally's this afternoon! Thanks

  6. @ Afton - Yes, maybe you were using too much. Scurl is tricky because sometimes it can over moisturize your hair which can cause breakage as well. Limit the amount you use and maybe consider doing a light protein treatment for some extra strength to prevent further breakage.

@ Ann - No problem hun! I'm happy to hear that you are having success with it. It's amazing.

@ UAN - Ohh really? Try the wave nouveau, you may like it :) Scurl is lovely too!

  9. I am happy that you did a blog about the S-Curl because I just bought it for the first time because I will put individual braids and I use it as a daily moisturizer mixed with my oils. Last year, I did the same with Wave nouveau but I wanted to try the S-curl to see if it was better!
Thank you, this post came on time for me!!!

  10. This is sooo funny. My mom has been using this product on her hair for YEARS but I never, not even thought about putting this product in my hair. For one, I thought it was just for people with curly hair. Two, I thought if I would put this in my relaxed hair, then my hair would become wet and nappy again. I'm glad you did a review on this product Sunshyne. This weekend, I will definitely try this products. Thanks.

  12. Sunshyne thanks for the review. I have question. When your hair dries after using S-Curl as leave-in conditioner do apply more S curl and seal or do you just seal? Thanks!

  13. Hi Sunshyne Thanks for the blog about S- curl i think i was using it wrong. My problem is it leaves my hair so wet and limp that when I put rollers in, my hair falls limp. I think i am putting too much. Thanks again

    ReplyDelete
  14. Your very welcome ladies. I'm glad this post helped you understand the product better. It's very easy to use a lot of this product and end up with mushy limp hair. Start with a small amount and see how your hair responds.

When I use Scurl as a leave-in conditioner, I spray it on, allow it to air dry. Then when my hair is completely air dried, I'll moisturize (scurl again) and seal.

    Hope that helps!

  16. You mention that the SCurl is better because it has no protein in it. Why is that good? I thought the hair needed both moisture and protein. Please explain. Thanks!

  17. why cant relaxed ladies sleep on it will it drip or something

    ReplyDelete
  18. LOL Natalie you wasted no time huh! I hope you like it.

@ Mary - I never said the product was better because there is no protein. It was one of the reasons why I like it. Hair does need a balance of both protein and moisture, however, some are very sensitive to it if it is left in the hair and not washed out i.e. leave-in conditioner, moisturizer etc. Sometimes it is best in the conditioning phase only. So a product like Scurl would be great for those who are looking strictly for a moisture based moisturizer.

  19. Wow this seems a promising product. I will definitely try this one. Thank you for sharing.

  20. I took your advice and used less of the S-Curl and my hair feels so much better. I still need to do a protein treatment and hopefully that will be the end of my breakage. Thank you so much.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Sexyhair - No problem :)

@ Afton - Your welcome. I'm glad it worked out for you. Do a light protein treatment with Aphogee reconstructor or ION reconstructor.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks, I'm still learning about the whole protein/moisture balance. Still confused as to when you would use a protein leave-in vs just doing a DC protein treatment.
Oh one other question, you mentioned you let the SCurl air dry, then spray again, then seal. So in general should sealing not be done right away?

  23. Does anyone use curl activator to do two-strand twists? Results? I'm in the TWA stage and want to try inexpensive products before purchasing the popular more expensive custards & puddings for natural hair.

  24. Have you ever tried Hawaiian Silky 14 n 1? It's a lot like s-curl but it has a lot more extracts like nettle and rosemary the only drawback is that it has mineral oil in it? Could you do a comparison between the two?

    ReplyDelete
  25. For one of the ladies, I think she was saying that you should miss trying the product just because you might have relaxed hair; Not that you literally couldn't sleep with the product in your hair.

  26. Hey I am a Guy I have natural good hair thick and curly I'm going from taper and waves to very short fro or Bob look how do I heritage shiny and curly without using scurl kit but I wont that type look and are the scurl kits bad for your hair

  27. I am 5mnths post relaxer and have been using this since I started going natural! I LOVE THIS STUFF! It makes my new grwoth soooo soft and it feels so moisturized!

I actually used it last night to moisturize and sealed with my Shea Butter mix and put in Curlformers and this morning I thought my roots would be a little dry like it usually is in the mornings but it WASNT! It was sooooo soft!

I did not think you could use this as a leave in! I use actually leave-ins and my roots are ALWAYS dry in the mornings. Think I will switch to my Scurl! Goin to have to buy the bigger bottle for this!

  29. Loving the new recipe with no parabens and no mineral oil. Keeps my 4b/4c hair super moisturized and soft with less breakage. I love it.

  30. It looks like sunshyne has relaxed hair in her picture and the s-curl was recommended for me to use on my new growth between relaxers. I'm not understanding from the blog or the comments so far if I "should or shouldn't use the s-curl on relaxed hair?

    1. Your hair will be perfectly fine if you use the Scurl No Drip Activator Spray on your relaxed hair. It's perfect especially if you are stretching your relaxers.
